Mostly wanted to read this thread to see how many people trashed Murphy. Not that bad, thank you. I sort of agree that Glass's rightside setting ain't that consistent, but most of those balls that Murphy had blocked were hittable. I think she needs to establish her line/tool hit to open up her devastating cross-court. The block in this match was just taking away her cross, but she was still able to beat it a little. Setting lefties is tricky. Technically, the set goes to the same spot as it does with righties, but most lefties prefer more inside than righties do in hitting on the left. Lowe is still a work in progress, but when she's on, she can be explosive. She's still not used to having to hit high hands. Murphy still plays better defense and blocks better. What did everybody think of Dietzen? And geez Louise, go to the window Kelsey! See here is the thing, we have seen Murphy bury it down the line before which leads me to conclude that of she isn't taking it like maybe with the sets she was getting she didn't feel like they were set where she could do it with authority? I mean to hit in line you have to take the swing across your body or snap on the ball different so I don't know.. Lowe only does it sometimes too... Kinda interesting.. Here is where I think slightly higher sets would help the two lefties because they would have more time to hit line or contort to do it sometimes... Idk..

Finally got to watch the match. Not sure why Adams was pulled after the first set. Yes, she missed a couple serves. I don't think she was playing badly. Originally, I had only seen the 3rd and 4th sets, so I couldn't understand why Karch didn't sub Lowe in for a struggling Murphy. After watching the first set, I can understand why! That double sub in set one was disastrous.
I agree with others that the main reason we aren't getting much production from our right sides is because of the setting. How many times was Murphy (or lowe) one on one.... yet they still got stuffed. Isn't it obvious that the timing is too fast for them? They are essentially swinging blind. I would really like to see the right side attack given a little more height to their set. I don't have the stats to prove it, but I would guess they are both equally efficient on in system and out of system attacks.
Great to see Robinson come in off the bench and to a great job!

I still believe that Robinson with her strong all around skills would make an amazing beach player. She could take gold in Tokyo!

I find it amusing when outsiders (anyone not in the gym everyday) say what teams should be doing. It seems to me that a staff of four(?) who sees the players everyday for four years would have a pretty good grasp of their team. It reminds me of when parents call the Dean to complain about my course material that their kids don't like. Having an ignorant opinion and expressing it is the life blood of any proper internet sports message board. If you're only looking for informed and rational discussions...sports and the internet are probably not the most ideal confluence of topic and medium to find it. Visceral reactionary comments, obnoxious bias, self importance, circular logic, and hyperbole are my precious rights as a fan. And I will passionately defend them to the hilt against sinister sterile existential threats such as logic, humility, and objectivity.

This USA team has adopted a very particular style and approach. It's silly to think that because this staff is heavily invested in this style that there can't be alternative approaches that might be more effective or ways to improve this style.

I've been saying this for awhile with the two lefties, I have noticed the Carli tends to set them slightly higher and they are more terminal that way it seems. However, I don't know if it is just Carli gets them better looks or if it is really the height of the set? It seems to me that Glass and Lowe gel better together and Carli and Murphy do just from the match against China a few weeks ago. When Murphy came in with Carli, the right side did much better and she was actually terminal. Fast forward to the matches since them Murphy and Glass struggle generally. It is very weird...

The high and mighty professor should read the fans comments when C T was selected, he will find that even more amusing.

Just re-watched this match and wow... we played high-level, low error ball. They took first set and second set we just kept coming at them with no fear and all the confidence in the world. Game 2 was a smack down.

Game 2 was a smack down. And yet the US still ended up below China for the final ranking. US beat China emphatically in the World Cup last year too and yet we still could not win the World Cup. In fact, the Olympics duplicated the World Cup result precisely for the medal winners. China was the Champion. Serbia was the runner-up and the US was third. This is despite the different formats for each tournament (round robin in World Cup vs knock-out elimination in final Olympic phase). I wonder why?
