Probably humble, it's our most admirable trait. But the really great one's are not always humble. Remember Ali?

... He turned me off when he started celebrating before he even won the race in Beijing. That is arrogance that is cocky. Athletes are polarizing figures no one will ever agree I wonder if a poll done prefers athletes to be excessive in their wins or for them to be humble. Sheeeit... If even thought I MIGHT win an Olympic gold, I'd probably start celebrating the week before! And seriously, when you win by a margin like that in the 100m AND set a new world record in the frickin' Olympics, you gotta be so filled with joy and amazement that you cannot possibly hold it in. Seriously, he destroyed the field. He started celebrating when he knew he won, even if it was before the finish. And did you rip on KWJ and MMT after this celebration? Or when other players jump and fist pump and hug and kick after a block. A single bock, a single point... not a gold and WR? Come on, VB celebrations are over the top, IMHO.

The difference in team sports and volleyball is play is largely based on momentum so throw those arguments out. It's a mental way of celebrating and getting back to it, using that to hopefully put you on a run. Track, swimming, gymnastics. There are plenty of athletes that don't celebrate over the top. I am not just skewed towards Americans I long didn't root for Serena in tennis because she was cocky. She only recently became my favorite tennis player cause of course USA but now she recognizes the greatness of her opponents. I like my athletes humble others like them in your face and over the top. A never ending debate. Like I said I wonder what the majority prefer though.

I like winners and like to see their joy and bliss. I don't think I was cocky when I was an athlete, but I certainly knew that there were times when I was there to kick some butt and I bet I had a little strut... and I intended for that strut to give me the momentum in the event. In HJ it was called "playing head games" - warming up in sweats, passing one extra height to get the other jumpers thinking, etc... nothing like the HJers today. They celebrate and dance and talk %*$# like crazy. And I kinda like watching it.

You watch a little kid race to the corner against the otehr little kids, and if he wins he's going to be excited and happy and maybe laughing and shouting "I win!" and ... well basically pretty much everything Bolt does. But in the US we have this strange Puritanical ideal that you have "act like you've been there before" and can't show off that you are having fun.
Cultural differences, perhaps.

Again this man Usain Bolt, literally has the entire weight of his countries hopes and aspirations on his back. Not to mention he choose to stay in Jamaica and live and train there. "I work hard, and I do good, and I'm going to enjoy myself. I'm not going to let you restrict me." Here are some other quotes from Bolt; www.azquotes.com/quote/31021
