think about this cycle: 2012-2013 summers: Brasil was #1 2014 : USA struggled most of summer, comes out winning world championships after a disappointing grand prix. note: some teams did not have all their players healthy.
note: USA's qualification depended on the result of another match, had the result been different over there USA would have been eliminated from semis.
2015: USA doesn't get qualification in the world cup. 2016: USA loses to Brasil in Grand Prix USA loses in Olympic Semi Final.
only period USA really DOMINATED was from 2014 gold win until before the world cup began. about 1 year total time.
Karch gets a C- for results with the team

7-1 at the Olympics, with the one loss being in 5 sets, 15-13 in the 5th. Bronze medal is a great accomplishment. Congrats to the women!
Have you ever won an Olympic medal?

China on the other hand... 2nd at World Championship, 1st at World Cup, 1st at the Olympics. Zhu was exhausted otherwise China may have taken 1st at the World Championships too. That is a much longer tournament. After already playing 9 matches, China had to ride Zhu against the Dominican Republic in 5 and then Italy in the Semifinals. She was only 19 at the time

I believe with a healthy Dixon and Easy on the roster, the results would of been different. And face it; some of the players just didn't show up with their 'A' game against Serbia. And when things got off script for Team USA - the coaching staff sometimes just doesn't make the right decisions.

To be honest, even though we got 3 bronze's in volleyball, I'm a little disappointed, but also amazed.
Disappointed because no one played for a gold, and really in each of those matches it came down to basic fundamental volleyball breakdowns...meaning serving and passing.
But amazing because of the fight and battles even in the losses. 5 set close match losses to some of the best players in the world means we are right there and oh so close. Also amazing with the resilliancy of the players coming back from losing their shots at gold, esp indoor with those 5 set losses, and bouncing back even though you could tell early on their heads weren't in the game, but somehow found their love of the game, will to win, competitiveness, whatever, and nutted it up and won the bronze. You really could see the change once they turned it back on.
Our worst showing was in mens beach, but lets also face the fact that Phil/Nick lost to the gold medal team and the #1 team in the world. Don't get me wrong here, hats off to Alison/Bruno for their gold, and they had an insanely difficult road to get to the match and that's not even talking about how hard it is to play on a sprained ankle.

be real... USA women didn't deserve a Gold. No one stood up to Karch. You mean like all the women who stood up to Ping and Terzic? Not one of your better points. No, like Grankin and Tetyukhin leaving the team till Alekno was reappointed.

Russia was losing to everyone, USA was winning World Championships, why would people be unhappy and leave? Relying on a weak field doesn't deserve Gold. All you can do is play the matches on your schedule. No Brazil helps but it's still a win in a major tournament. USA rode the system that helped them perform their best in this quad, which was also the best they had ever done in history. Roster and lineup questions will always come up if you don't win, but I think the system and philosophy of the program were transparent and consistent the whole quad.

The biggest achievement this quad was that USA Volleyball (and Karch/staff) made this into a team oriented program. There were a lot of times in the past where players were competing for the name on the back of jersey, and not for their team and country. That got reversed this quad, and will serve the US well moving into the future.
