People can talk about ANY team they want to talk about, even if they are NOT in the top 25 poll. It's a FREE COUNTRY! Geez. It's a free country, BUT what is this thread titled? Yes you read right. It is not titled, teams I wish were in the top 25. I'm sure Idaho and even Georgetown for that matter have its merits, but that's probably another thread you can start.

Of course, with a Top 25 poll SUBJECT, you're going to get a lot of talk about teams that some people think SHOULD HAVE been in the Top 25. That's how discussions of polls work. I think you know that. You're just hassling IB. Carry on...

Didn't say they were (meant to predict the AVCA ranking). So there. Please call off your dog. Don't worry... my pup has had his rabies shots. Besides, his bite would totally put you out of your misery, you may welcome it after Minnesota falls to my preseason expectations.

Well it's true BYU HAS struggled. But the Cougars are still the third winningest team in NCAA history, Show me the stats to back this one up, please. Third in the West? 1. Hawaii 2. Colorado State 3. Utah 4. MAYBE BYU... Maybe. Where are you getting your stats? The ones you pull out of your caboose don't count. A) Penn State was overrated last season. B) BYU had some pretty bad losses too. Again, I don't think so. Lots of talent, lots of depth, but when there are 22 on the roster easy to say that. Unfortunately for BYU, they won't be able to put enough of that talent into 6-7 girls to be competitive. Consider it marked. I'll be gloating that you were wrong. BYU doesn't have what it'll take to beat UCLA. Notre Dame, maybe, but who cares if they beat them. If BYU had faced Idaho in the first round... they would have been out in the first round last season. The first round opponent was cheesecake.

If there is a team that I really like this year, but really hate it's colorado state. I really hate to say this, but the rams are going to be really good this season and I'm sure they'll move up. With everybody returning from a team that ran the table on a decent MWC last year, this is a team to watch and in my mind is a clear cut No. 2 team at the NACWAA next to USC. If any team has an opportunity to knock USC off early in the season, and I think that's when the Trojans would be most succeptible, it will be by CSU in the Moby, which is a very difficult place for opponents to play. Heck I'll say it because it'll have early season poll implications ... CSU will win the NACWAA over USC.

The NCAA is still in the midst of it's digitization project for its historical archive. Volleyball is part of the phase two project and that's slated to be up on the Web, although probably not in its entirety, later this week or early next week. So finding something from the NCAA is pretty hard. So I tried to find something non-BYU related to show. No. 1 is UCLA with 960+, No. 2 is Southwest Missouri State with 930 and No. 3 BYU with 925. The following is a link to the SMS release, which is a pdf and the info you'd be looking for is on the first page on the left. www.smsbears.net/volleyball/gamenotes/5306.pdfBy the way Andy Banachowski has all the wins for UCLA and former BYU coach Elaine Michaelis is second alltime in NCAA Division I volleyball with 887. I'm skeptical of SMS's record because (as an example) in one year (1975) it recorded 64 wins against teams like the KC Jewish Community Center, Tulsa Women's volleyball Club, Swain's MFA Insurance and Dever Angelos. But whatever they think is legit, I guess. I can admit it when I make a mistake. I meant to say fourth. Third was still in my mind from the previous comment. And for the record, ROY is great when it comes to stats and I am too, albeit probably to a lesser degree. But I check everything I put out, unless I put an arbitrary disclaimer on it. It was No. 1 Hawaii, No. 2 CSU, No. 3 UCSB and No. 4 BYU ... see for yourself. www.avca.org/collegiate/04DIWPreview.asp#WestWhether PSU was overrated or not is not the point. That's subjective and sure Russ Rose has never been one to agressively schedule non-conference opponents, but PSU only lost five times last year and were a legitimate top 10 team. That can't be argued. Sure they weren't a USC, but what do you want? As far as BYU's BAD losses go, any loss to Utah is very bad and any loss to CSU is bad, so they did have five (damn Utes and Rams) 'bad losses. Other than that BYU lost to top five teams Hawaii and Florida. And there were two matches the team should have won and didn't. Against Arkansas they had it and lost it. Against SMS they were never in it. Sure they played their fourth match in two days, but I remember telling some of the girls it doesn't matter how good you think you are if you don't show up. Hopefully they'll show up everytime out in 2004, but losing two matches out of 33 that they should've won is not too bad. No excuses though. time will tell. And the BYU track record speaks for itself. No national championships, but one final four and No. 8 on all time NCAA Tournament wins with 27. Not bad. Last year was a rebound year and this year the team will take another step forward to where it has and should be. I will not gloat when BYU wins. And it's too bad that BYU was able to advance to the second round last year wasn't it?

Blasphemy!! Bah!!! I'll think of something intelligent to say when the AVCA voters get the preseason poll intelligently done. You're right. Hawaii is ranked way too high. Funny how the shoe is on the other foot now, isn't it? Quit yer bitchin about the poll, isn't that what you told me last year? Hypocrite. For the record, I think Florida is too high.

cougarize, as a BYU volleyball fan, I'm going to be fair and say that BYU's last season was quite forgetable and yes, BYU beat an overranked PSU team.
Looking forward to seeing some good things this year with Melanie Togo as libero, I think she is a much better digger than Uila Crabbe but their passing game was about the same.
Hopefully Kim Wilson has added more variety to her shots, that other OH Lindsey Metcalf will get benched for a player who hits with authority, Hartstock was good last year buthopefully she's raised her game to new levels and I hope that foxy babe Lexi Brown will play the whole season with no more injuries.
And finally, I hope that Lauren Richards will settle down and actually be a setter instead of a miss do it all.
Do you know who is filling in at the right side? They need another Korie Rogers...she was hella tight......

April Varner is still on the roster...well, it's safe to say that for the exception of Kim Wilson, BYU will be weak at the OH position this season. BYU has been weak at that spot for how many years now.....c'mon, there's got to be a Mormon Logan Tom out there....hahahahaha.......

BYU has been weak at that spot for how many years now.....c'mon, there's got to be a Mormon Logan Tom out there....hahahahaha....... Her name is Kristin Richards and when it came down to BYU or Stanford she picked the bloody red school. I agree that OH will be a sore spot for BYU once again. Kim Wilson can get the ball down pretty good, and put on an impressive stretch during the BYU Mizuno Classic stretch last year, but she is still woefully inconsistent and does not possess a killer instinct like top OH's need. She, along with too many other, Cougars worry too much of their appearance on court than the results on it. Lindsey Metcalf is the team's best all-around athlete, but the shoulder surgery she had just before coming to BYU killed her arm swing. But she has worked extremely hard and has alot of heart. And Varner? She has talent, and when she's on, she's great, but she's missing some heart. Not to worry there are a slew of recruits the Cougars have who can be impact OH's. Erica Lott is a 6-2 Fab 50 who redshirted last year and is slated as a RS/OH. She'll compete with senior Mandi Kiholm on the RS. Also on the OH is incoming frosh Chelsea Goodman who is a fireball and Bryn Porter, who has battled injuries, but is very athletic. Competition will be the name of the game in two-a-days and because of that hopefully it'll bring out the best in the girls and we'll all be able to see who steps to the forefront. Save Katie Jo Shirley (Cahoon) Lexi Brown is the best offensive MB in the MWC and one of the best in the West Region. Along with Hartsock they should form one of the best MB tandems around.

Should we change the title of this thread to "Everything you wanted to know about BYU, even though they aren't in the Top 25 Coaches Poll"? ;D ;D ;D

Why did these teams get votes? Starting from the bottom... Tennessee with more votes than North Carolina? I actually think that Tennessee is going to surprise a few of you this year. Though the SEC is not the toughest conference, expect them to finish near the top. They have all players returning, not to mention a few good ones. One player being Amy Morris, a transfer from Penn State, who has the ability to be an all american quality hitter. I have watched her since her high school days in Indiana, and I believe after having last year to gel with the team, will this season have a breakout year. Count me as the first to say on here that this team will have a good season and don't be surprised to see them in the NCAA's.
