Lots of chatter already about Wisconsin picking up a good libero transfer for 2017. This sort of thing happens through the back channels during the volleyball season. It will become official only after the two teams end their seasons. Is there a coach more ruthless about poaching players off of other rosters than Sheffield? It seems a bit ridiculous that he went and stole a kid mid-season. This is baselessly casting aspersions. Five players that were unhappy in their situations for various reasons have ended up coming to UW because there was a place for them. Some have played major roles, some have mostly been on the bench, but in each case one can understand why they wanted to move from their previous situation - many times because they have spoken publicly about it, like Gillis.

Since Sheff arrived at Wisconsin, 49 schools have received as many or more transfers.
Since 2013 all these teams 'beat' Wisconsin in this stat. (I tried to eliminate CC and JuCo transfers, but I know I probably missed a few): Cal State Fullerton 16
Winthrop 15
Manhattan College 12
Arizona 11
Eastern Washington 11
Tennessee 10
Florida Atlantic 9
UC Riverside 9

When did Gillis transfer? 2014 along with Robbins and Kriskova when Juley retired and Fricano transferred to UNC Ah, so even though she played the 2014 season at 'SC, she is considered a 2014 transfer? Not arguing, just trying to understand the conventions for counting transfer years.

I got my numbers off of the 2015 transfer chart and they were not listed there so thought they were 2014 www.uwbadgers.com/news/2015/4/29/Volleyball_adds_two_transfers_for_2015.aspx

Sounds like good recruiting to me if only 3 were prospects, especially if they were young. If they were to meet the current team they would never even play with a majority of them, by bringing in the committed kids in the classes above them at the same time they get to meet kids they could be playing with. Its great recruiting. I think Coach Sheffield and his staff are probably the top recruiter(s) in the country at the current moment. As opposed to the previous moment?

Is there a difference between desperation transfers and highly-desired prospects? The transfers to USC are Sarah Livingston, Madison Murtagh (to replace Rachel Reed?), Nikki Withers (to replace Ebony), Nicki Leonard (to replace Baylee Johnson), and ? Only one of them actually plays much. Does Reni count in USC's total of 5? She did not play or practice with the team last year, and was just a student on campus.

They rarely lose a recruiting battle, and while Texas is a good school, it doesn't pull players for its own sake like Stanford (unless the kid grew up in Texas and/or is a legacy). Pulling players like Sun, Yaz, Shook, et al., shows they can go national and poach. Even when they lose a player like Chiaka or Eb, they flip them back.

You have noted 4 transfers into Colorado for the 2016 season. By looking at the roster, the 4 transfers are : Alexa Smith from Purdue, Kiara McKibben from San Francisco, Marie Zimmerman from Sacred Heart and Frankie Shebby from Oregon. But this is a good example of how that simple analysis distorts the picture.
When you look a little deeper into the facts for each player you would see that Marie Zimmerman had given up inter-collegiate volleyball after 2 seasons at Sacred Heart and transferred to her home-state school, Colorado, in 2015 as a regular student. She then played for the Colorado club team in 2015. She joined the inter-collegiate team for the 2016 season when they needed backup setter help. She was not a "volleyball transfer".
Then if you look at Frankie Shebby you find that she had been dismissed from the Oregon team for not meeting certain obligations and could no longer play for Oregon. So if she wanted to continue to play inter-collegiate volleyball she had to go to another school. So for her the choice was transfer or give up volleyball. Because of conference rules, she has had to sit out the 2016 season. Again not the typical "volleyball transfer".
The other 2 players were playing at their precious schools, were eligible to continue to play at their previous schools and choose for whatever reasons to transfer to Colorado. These 2 are the typical "volleyball transfer". Both these players were returning to their home state.
