Ok, I admit my Nebraska bias but I just don't think Nancy is getting enough sets. She absolutely crushing the ball. It's seems to me that she almost always puts it down for point the few times she is set. I do not have any Nebraska bias but I do agree with you. Haneef may be great but she is very inconsistent but Toshi absolutely love her

Haneef may be great but she is very inconsistent but Toshi absolutely love her From the stats on the Olympic site, it looks as though Tom and Haneef are not dominating as hitters (hitting at no more than 0.200), but are doing just well enough not to be substituted. This is not so much of a problem for Tom, who brings a lot in passing, defence etc, but Haneef is there to block and spike, and so USA need her to be dominating in those areas. Especially when one of the outsides isn't producing. Despite this, Toshi seems set on keeping Haneef on the court, and using Metcalfe only in the power sub. I think he may need to bite the bullet and put her on for Haneef, because a team that loses to the Dominican Republic is not going to go very far.

Very possibly a classic case of underestimating the opponent. DR should have been no match for Team USA.
Things are getting very interesting in this group. GER vs RUS is an important match today in determining the team that will go out.

Hate to be Mr. Doomsayer here but
The End is Near!
Could things be going worse for US Volleyball? I'm not your flag-waving sports fan, but in the US this sport REALLY needs a strong Olympic performance in order for it to grow.
Instead, they are in danger of not even getting out of their pool and Beach ball is getting all the prime air time.
Too bad no one will see the China-Cuba match today, for instance. THAT is volleyball. THAT promotes the actual sport. Instead we will get that watered-down, sexed-up version...
Woe. She is I.

Wow! This is a huge upset. I thought everyone dismissed D.R.'s chances of advancing past the 1st round, and here they are, upsetting the higher-ranked and much-touted US team. I guess it just shows you that in Olympics, anything can happen.

Up until yesterday, the D.R. had beaten USA only once in about a hundred matches. This should have been a cakewalk for USA. The Olympics is no time to be "surprised" by a 3rd-World team that's lucky just to be in the competition. It's like they took a page out of the men's "Dream Team" script.
I still don't think the Haneef is doing what you would expect from a 6'7" OPP. She's not terminating or blocking like she should and backcourt movement and ball control are subpar compared to the competition. I'd like to see what Metcalf can do in a full match.

Two very good points. At a tournament like this every match you play is a final and needs to be played with utmost concentration and seriousness. I was not able to watch the match but friends who did have been saying that the USA could have won this 3-0 if not for simple errors at the end of sets. This should not be happening to a team of this caliber at a tourney like this. I hope they will be able to pull it together and win the next two for a place in the QF. As for Haneef vs Metcalf, I've not watched that much of Haneef but what I had seen of Metcalf during her time in Despar has been impressive. She came thru for them both and OH and Opp positions whenever they needed her (esp during CL when they had to shuffle things around due to injuries). If Haneef is not delivering what she should, Metcalf certainly deserves a chance to prove herself.

Classic example of a program falling in love with height. Is The Idahoser a consultant? Listen to me. Criticizing Toshi. What a dweeb I be. It's particularly important for Haneef (or Metcalf) to terminate because of the USA's OHs. They just are not the type of players who will put the ball away at a really high percentage. Maybe Ogonna is, but she has her other flaws. I'm actually surprised the USA has been playing so well leading up to the Olympics (although their habit of going 5 games has proven to be disastrous). They only have 1 real offensive weapon--Scott. And they can only use her when they pass well. Would they go to Nancy at OH? Does Phipps have anything left in the tank? Can Haneef step up? How's Ah Mow been setting anyhow? I haven't been able to see any of their games since China.

But it's 5 games, so it'll be butchered. Hell, the USA-Netherlands match was only 3 games and they only showed part of that. Why bother? Wouldn't want to miss a minute of Paul Hamm emoting with his buddies, now would we?

I take it back. You are right. They now have it listed in both time slots--1230-4pm and 1135pm-1am.
I would think you'll have a good chance to see quite a bit of the match this afternoon?

I thought they would have learned from the loss to Poland in last year world cup. Maybe not. they underestimated their opponent again. I do not care how tall Haneef is and how Toshi keeps hailing her as the hope of Team USA, she is not powerful enough, sure she let the team in Kills but she got the most attempts and her percentage is not high. I thought Cross Battle's role is to help the team chemistry because of her VAST EXPERIENCE Blah Blah Blah.. It sure help

they should've given TCB's spot to Cynthia, she's gonna be around a lot longer than TCB so why not give the younger player that experience?

Clearly Toshi has lost his mind! Metcalf has proven herself by leading the team at Montreux and 3rd or 4th overall in attacking. Toshi has stated that Tayyiba is our hope, but she again is not getting the job done. In Grand Prix she hit under .200 and is not much higher in Athens. Metcalf was set 5 times and had 4 kills, no errors. I understand Toshi sees much potential in a 6"7 OPP, but this is not the time for potential. Get Metcalf in the game!
