Yeah, but their rivalry isn't quite the same as before. Yeah, the chokeholds and hair-pulling have been replaced by dirty, catty looks at each other and "talk-to-the-hand" gestures. Hehe. YOU GO GIRLFRIEND!!!!

The 2 semis have lived up to their billing. 5-set matches for both! Wow! I wish I could watch this live. NBC's not going to show this on TV for sure!

Game 4 was an amazing comeback by Russia. Brazil just flat out choked it away. Russia--some may not like their style of play but I love the OH bombs. It's amazing that they can take down the hottest team in the tournament with NO middle attack in their offense. GamKolova was clutch down the stretch. The howling bear was in full effect as usual and willed his team to a victory. Brasil--tough match. Go talk to the Greek men about choking away an insurmountable lead. A handful of spikes sailed long, into the block, and 3m line violations on match-points, most of them by the young kid, Mari. You gotta wonder why Fernanda kept going to her on match points with so much on the line. It must have been killing the veterans to see their dream die on the arm of the newest player on the team. You could see the frustration on Virna's face. I wonder if she's more pissed at Mari, or at Fernanda for setting her. To be fair, Mari had been carrying the team the entire match. It's just too bad for she just couldn't deliver at the end. But she's young and will be back for more.

It's just too bad for she just couldn't deliver at the end. But she's young and will be back for more. I snuck home and caught the final 2 points of the broadcast. I think it was 14-14 in G5. Anyway, Brazil screwed up on their substitution at 14-13, they meant to pull the setter/opp double sub, but their coach only called for one sub to put the opp in the front row for Fernanda, then tried to get the second sub in for the OPP player that was serving. The R2 was gonna let them, but the R1 intervened and said no (which, according to protocol, is the correct administration of that situation - as retarded as that sounds). So Brazil played that rally with no setter, which really didn't matter as RUS sided-out clean anyway to tie at 14-14. Fernanda subbed back in LF. She went to Virna on the left and the RUS block gobbled her attack up for 14-15. Then Fernanda called theBRA MB on the slide, then set Mari the pipe, which I thought was a good call as the RUS block got out-of-position chasing the slide. However, Mari just waffled it wide, looks like she had a late approach on a very low, fast pipe. Objectively, this has been one heck of a tournament - lots of matches not only going 5 sets, but the margin in G5 being on the order of 17-15, 18-16, etc. decisions. If you're a vball fan with no favorites or bias (like me), this stuff is gold.

It never surprises me when the Brazilians choke. They have a lot of pressure on them, and it seems to me that they are clueless about preparation for the enormity of the Olympic games. It's a different beast, folks, and it can bite you.

For the second straight olympics, both semi matches went 5. Finally Cuba lost a five setter in the olympics semi, They beat USA in 92 and Brazil in 96 and 00 and won all after being down 2-1

What happened to Erika? Apparently she started but later was pulled out. Injury? I can't believe it was due to a weak performance but who knows.

What is up with Brazil! I thought they were more mentally tough than this. Wonder if it might have sthg to do with the fact that their 3 best players have a combined age of 99.... Two five-setters in a row.....
