Wonder if it might have sthg to do with the fact that their 3 best players have a combined age of 99.... Two five-setters in a row..... Not only the score but the pattern as well: 2-0 early and gradually 2-3.

Karpol was still his usual self, screaming at everyone. At one point, Valentina Oguienko, threw away all the sub placards bec. she was fed up with Karpol. Jerry Estes (former US National team asst. coach) had to pacify Oguienko. And to think, she played for Karpol.
Wow, Russia didn't play Chachkova in the last 3 games.

I heard that Oguienko is as much a hardass as Karpol. She used to stink-eye and bitch at the other players as much as Karpol when she was MB on the team. Chachkova=Sokolova...she played the whole match and was crucial in the 4th and 5th game comebacks. From the middle of the 4th game on (which is all that was shown on CNBC), I remember only one set to an MB and no sets to their OPP, Plotnikova. ALL sets went to either Gamova or Sokolova.

I've heard this as well and that Karpol is a pretty likeable (and mostly well liked by his players) guy out of the sports hall. He has said in interviews before that his behaviour during matches is a part of the show for him. I believe he does it as much because it's expected of him as to motivate his players....

Wait, I'm confused about the Russians again. Is Sokolova different from Chachkova and different from Kilic? BTW, how much of the match did they broadcast? I saw from about 16-17 in G4. Was there more than that aired?

Sisam, could you research why Chachkova went to Kilic and then Sokolova?
When I was watching, I told myself that Sokolova looks like a young Chachkova!
Also, Tyurina looks different, younger from 4 years ago?

Also, Tyurina looks different, younger from 4 years ago? No need to research:) Sokolova is her maiden name - she started with that name. She then married a russian guy and took his name, Chachkova (or Shashkova depending on spelling). This is the name she really became known by. When she played for Eczacibasi during the 2000-2001 season, she met a Turkish vb player Aytac Kilic, divorced her husband and came to Turkey. She married Aytac and goes by Kilic now. (Lost of happenings during this happenings which cost her a year of volleyball and she has lost of troubles with Karpol as you probably already know) I guess the Russian team did not want to put her Turkish last name on her jersey so their back to using her maiden name. In Italy she still goes by Kilic.

The Russian setter looked great last night. I though she wasn't supposed to be that good. She rode on Gamova and Sokolova who were on all the time! Her breakout tournament?

I think she's doing quite good for her age and lack of experience too. She took over the starting job from Olga Chukanova only at the MVM tournament a couple of months ago and has done a good job. She plays them a lot faster than Chukanova ever did though her style takes a little getting used to. Russia was hurt a lot in the recent tournament because of subpar setting (after Vassilevskaia and Gratcheva left the NT). There was even talk of Vassilevskaia coming back but instead Karpol threw at us his new protege. I expect she will be even better by the next OG rolls around. Her connecting with Sokolova is even more impressive considering how long Sokolova has been absent from the Russian NT and how late she joined them.
