The Cubans are celebrating like they won the gold. But great effort from them, who would thought that they will win a medal but I cannot help but feel for Brazil, who would thought that they will go home empty handed. The future of Cuba looks bright again as they have a lot of young players but Brazil will lose quite a few veterans and will Mari Steinbrecher ever recover from the semi nightmare? I hope Mari will get over this Olympic nightmare. She has to move on, she's still young. She never had an experience playing for Brazil prior to the Grand Prix and the Olympics. Just imagine, she came straight from her club team to the national team. But she's an amazing player. Give her the chance to prove herself again. If you didn't know, Mari was just a substitute for Bia in their club team. When Bia got injured, she was the one who replaced Bia in the lineup, from then on, she became a starter. She was the Best Scorer in the Superliga last year. The first time, I saw this player on training, I knew she was good. But let's give her time to redeem herself. I believe in Mari.

...will Mari Steinbrecher ever recover from the semi nightmare? Mari really needs to toughen up her psyche. She cried in the middle of the semi after the coach chews her out. To paraphrase Tom Hanks in "A League of Their Own", there's no crying in volleyball. And then she just pouts her way through a medal match showing no support for her team. This may be her first really big tournament but she's not a kid. Hopefully she'll get over this experience because she has some great skills and Brazil will need her in the next four years. On the other hand, the coach should not have yanked her so soon in the first game. He should have given her a chance to redeem herself.

realy?? she cried?? dam i missed the firstt half of the game.. i think the coach shouldve let her played...they probably lost because mari didnt play...she gets like 20 points every single game...and it reali wasnt her fault about the russia game, she had 37 points in that game~~ without her, they probably wouldn't have got so close anyways...

Brazil looked shell-shocked. I couldn't believe the number of shanked passes in the 4th set when they're normally very steady. The announcer on CBC (think it was Charles Parkinson) said that Brazil just seemed that they didn't have the heart and that Cuba was determined not to go home empty handed since they didn't get to defend their Olympic championship (I'm paraphrasing here big time).
Ruiz was just flying and she got set a lot. That woman can really sky.

Sorry, I joined the match late, so not sure if anything happened that Mari wasn't playing. Was she benched this match? I saw her on screen but she wasn't playing at the time, and she didn't look too happy.

The US was ranked #1 and Brazil was ranked #2 coming into the Olympics?
Is this the first time that nether of the two top ranked teams earned a medal?

It cannot be 3 consecutive golds because when Cuba won in 2000, it was mentioned that they are the first team to win 3 consecutive gold medals in volleyball Oh sorry, silvers in 1964 and 1976, golds in 1968 and 1972.

I'll try to get her side on this when she's already back in Brazil.

Really???!! What set was that? I'll try to get her side on this when she's already back in Brazil. I didn't actually see it. Mike Dodd, the NBC commentator, mentioned a few times that at the end of one of the semi-final sets, the Brazilian coach blasted her and she came out of the huddle crying. I feel bad for her, but in sports, if you get yelled at, you don't sob like a little girl. You get pissed off and come out fighting.

There's going to be hell to pay when they get home, especially for the coach. Tough losses for Brasil's basketball, soccer, and VB teams.

I barely see her cheer when they win, what more than to see her cry. Wow, I should really watch that match.

I may be wrong here, but isn't the current Brazil coach a new one having replaced the last one after Brazil finished 7th in the 2003 Grand Prix? Their expectations were very high after Brazil won the 2004 Grand Prix and came in 2nd in the 2003 World Cup, much like the US had also high expectations.
