Any Gopher fans surprised that Nelson and Byrnes are holding their own with the twin towers of SC?

This sucks.
Not only can't I be at the match, watch it on TV (good one, eh?), listen to it, or read about it, I can't even stand outside in August to watch the fireworks, because it's too damned cold!
Official end of my whining. (For tonight.)

Crazy.. USC must really be feeling the loss of Ross, Olsovsky, Anderson, and Davis... obviously those are big shoes to fill, but i figured they would be OK with what they had returning and with their freshman class.. Kudos to Minnesota so far.. a lot closer than I would have imagined.
GO BIG TEN.

Did AVCA drop the ball in not having this tournament on the tube?

I bet that CSTV is also kicking themselves for not getting the rights to this event!

Nelson blocked very well last season and she was fighting nagging injuries (shoulder injury, abdominal pull, and ankle injuries I believe) last year as a frosh. Its nice to see them both playing very well so far this year. I think one of the big things for the Gophers though is that they're playing extremely good defense. That's something (R)uffda! has been emphasizing in his posts for a while now. Both Taatjes and Bowman are very good on defense so the 6-2 allows the Gophers to keep both of them on the court for the entire match. Taatjes was one of the leading diggers for the Gophers last year and both she and Bowman were just behind Gentil in digs against Colorado State last night. I think perhaps the bigger surprise for people that haven't seen her play / practice much is that Bowman is hitting very well against USC tonight and hit well against CSU last night.

Yeah, I agree with you. I think Minnesota's middle attack was just waiting to break out a bit. However, I am surprised that the rightsides are doing as well as they are. Sounds like they are making USC's block stay pretty honest and not gang up on Martin/Bratford

I think also Nelson had a nagging stress fracture for about the last two months of the season. I know she wore a brace on the leg that went from her ankle to her knee.

Any score updates? It's gotta be late in game 4...

Got the email off to the SID. Hopefully the fix it. I'm bored over here. He didn't respond to my email, and the webcast is down getting the busy signal. *sigh*

Argh - what's going on with this match? It was 12-10 Gophers in the 4th the last time anyone posted a score!

Sounds like they are making USC's block stay pretty honest and not gang up on Martin/Bratford Taatjes did pretty well blocking last year and Bowman at the same 5-10" height is just one of those "natural athletes". I think the backrow defense of those two somewhat cuts down the normal advantage of teams that have big bangers at opposite since Taatjes / Bowman can make the first play on the ball and not have to worry about one of the non-setters having to chase it down to make a set.

No further updates here, I asked (R)uffda! to tell Oscar to turn his cell phone on but I keep getting his voice mail.
I don't want to call (R)uffda! since he's low on battery and I don't want to prevent him from being able to call Mrs. (R)! with his final dwindling ergs of power.

Mrs. (R) or the entire volleyball community who wants USC to be dethroned?! ;D
