Claes/Hughes are well ahead of Day/Hochevar in the current World Rankings (best eight finishes in the past 365 days). Day/Hochevar did themselves no favors in Rio, taking a 25th compared to Claes/Hughes 5th place points.

Somewhat off topic, but if a college student participates in AVP (or really any other tournament) and earns money, are they allowed to accept it? College student or college athlete? I believe the answer would be that yes, a college student (non-athlete) could accept the money. They aren't retaining amateur status for anything if they aren't playing a sport in college. A college athlete could collect the money and reimburse themselves for "reasonable" expenses I believe. They can't just take prize money as a profit. Someone on here probably knows a little more and will clarify, but that's probably not too far off reality.

I don't want to call anyone out, but I saw a picture of a current student athlete with a check after winning a tournament. Of course it could have just been symbolic and she may not have accepted any money, but it just got me wondering.

Posing for a pic with a check isn't a great optic, but college players are allowed to use prize money for "reasonable and necessary" expenses for that specific tournament. For example, Claes/Hughes won $10,000 in 2016 at an AVP tournament. Under current NCAA rules, they were able to use that prize money to pay for travel, hotels, meals, and other incidental expenses while at the tournament. But whatever is left over cannot be kept by the players. But they (or any collegiate player) damn sure need to hold on to every receipt and turn them in to their respective school's compliance office.

I'm surprised that elite college players don't try to use this to go to some lesser known FIVBs, maybe the one in Thailand etc. Basically get a free vacation if they can get out of the qualifier. Does it have to be a single tournament or could Claes/Hughes have done a European swing of the FIVB in past years and sort of combined expenses?

Why aren't the brackets up? Seems like last year we saw them as they went along and this year the cone of secrecy. Are they up somewhere other than bvb?

They are up now. Summer Sweat smacked the Trojans around something fierce. Maybe that Ft. Lauderdale finish wasn't a fluke. Good first round for the US teams so far. I also like how Russia started Friday late. Its still dumb to have 60% of the knockout on Friday when the weekend is wide open, but this is slightly better

Thanks - I was looking for AVP NYC - at least I'm not blind! For Austin, they came out on the AVP.com site before BVBinfo.
