I don't know any of these teams other than the four I saw this weekend: Hawaii, UCLA, Marquette, San Diego. And I can't name a single San Diego player other than Dan Fouts and Junior Seau. Seems like I heard something about Fouts having good passing skills.

Is the point of the poll to reward who is going to be the best team or who played the best volleyball last weekend?(I know its political as all hell). One could certainly argue for the Gators to be #1 given who they beat, and yes they did play at home. I thought Nebraska would drop further. Are the Huskers getting a pass because Hunter is hurt? Is that fair? Did Creighton get a big enough boost for beating Washington on their home floor(no easy feat) or snubbed by the poll's love for the B1G? I honestly don't know that teams should get a pass losing because they have kids gone due to injury because this is the team they have on the floor at that moment. In the end it's the first weekend of the season. The next few weekends will prove interesting. There's no definitive "point" to the poll. It's up to the voter. What exactly is being ranked (actual results, belief as to which team is "best" regardless of results, belief as to how teams will finish in the postseason, etc.) is also up to the voter. Seems like most voters take the preseason poll to heart, and make weekly adjustments based on that week's results, trying to make all the pieces fit (which is essentially impossible). Occasionally, you might see a voter engage in a larger analysis and make big changes after they've seen enough to conclude "this team never should have been ranked this high/low to begin with, so their current ranking is off, and I'm gonna adjust accordingly." Then, there's the seemingly random votes seemingly based on nothing tangible.

They were great for San Diego.

I will ignore the political comment but will say that yes, many of the coaches are knowledgeable enough about other teams to give a pass when a player is injured such as Hunter for Nebraska. Last year, Palm Beach Atlantic (D2) started the season 0-3 but stayed in the top 10 because voters recognized that they belonged there still. After that PBA ran off I think 34 wins in a row before falling to Alaska Anchorage in the NCAA's. Had Cook said that Kelly Hunter is out all year, that would have changed the perception I am sure. Curious who you think Creighton should have leapfrogged?

Creighton played very well. UW was missing one of their top players (Crissy Jones, ankle) and is playing a new lineup (Tia Scambray to Libero being the biggest change), which will take some time to gel. Just ironic because I read something like, "UW reached the Elite Eight, and returns PAC POY and 2nd Team AA Setter, and loses no-one ..." about 100 times during the off season. Now they lose and we get excuses about a new line-up. Well, based on exactly the facts you mention, they probably did deserve to be at least top-five -- if they had just continued with last year's scheme. But radically reshuffling the lineup meant they have nearly as many adjustments to work through as anybody else. Cook is betting that by the end of the season they will be better than they would have if they just stood pat. Anyway, lots of undefeated good teams, so it's quite reasonable to drop the defeated teams down. Which leads to the question about why Texas is still sitting so high.

Curious who you think Creighton should have leapfrogged? I will stand corrected in saying that I thought someone leaped over the Jays when I first posted and realize that no one did. I'm not sure they deserve to most past anyone that went undefeated based on one huge win. What I simply meant by politics is that some times the bigger conferences do get a little more love than the little guys and I'm a Husker fan. See SEC football. :-)

Hawaii dropped out as expected. Tied in 29th with Baylor. They're going to need to win the rest of their non-conference games especially against Utah, BYU and Baylor to possibly make it back into the rankings. Wins in the Big West won't do them any good in terms of rankings and RPI.

I'm fully expecting you to respond "just more excuses", to which I will simply respond, ahead of time, "la di da"... I said that Creighton played very well. They are very good, played high-level volleyball, and earned the win, on the road. UW did have a major starter out with injury and has revamped their lineup, with the notion that, while it might cause some discombobulation starting out, it will pay dividends later in the season. While all their starters are back from last year, this year: * Only two, Tanner at S and Schwan at OH, started at the same position. * Jones at OPP got injured (two days prior to the opener). * Two started, Julye at OH and DeHoog at OPP, who weren't starters last year. * Scambray moved from OH to L. * McPherson moved from L to DS. * Bajema moved from MB to OH, but didn't start (but probably will from now on). * Two newcomers started at MB: Sanders (True Frosh) and Hazelwood (5th Year Transfer). * One starter, Niece at MB, didn't start or play. So, lots of changes, but mostly voluntary. It is what it is. I actually don't mind where UW is in the Poll right now. I thought #3 was high. I'd rather they earn their ranking than just float to the top based on others' losses. I thought that the Trojans played great and deserved to move up quite a bit more than they did. I always root for Reni Meyer-Whalley (an ex-Husky).

I was just chuckling because the UW fans on this board were *very* high on the team throughout the off-season (rightfully so, as they will do very well). TBH, I am not sure Jones is better than a healthy De Hoog anyway. I was also proud of Reni. She really has improved her setting tempo and location from last year.

I also impressed with Florida's MB.... no, not Al Hassan, Kramer! Ok, Al Hassan is impressive too. They have to be the best MB tandem. Williams and Rettke are going to challenge for that title....
