Pretty sure that's a 1/2 star FIVB event but it's a step.

I believe that is playjng with the big boys... sorta Seems akin to a pretty weak NORCECA. This is a very confusing event. Why would promoters want to run a tiny cold-weather event in the Netherlands if they couldn't even get the top Dutch teams to play?

They are listed in the MD for the 2 star in Sydney later this month. With the 160 points they got here, may have gotten them into the MD. The 2 star is more points, which now they are guaranteed, which will help them get into the next.... Not sure if you were expecting them to be able to go straight to the big tournaments??? They are taking the same path as the French team of Aye / Krou which is paying off for them.

I think they also get free travel and the trip to Holland is nice, but a free Australian trip is even better. That actually brings me to another point, the main reason that college kids with potential, a Taylor Sander or Aaron Russell for example, go indoor rather than beach seems to be money. If USAVolleyball is spending a couple hundred thousand a year on NORCECA trips, one and two star trips to events like these etc., why not figure out a way to make that prize money for US events or some kind of training incentive for players like Russell/Sander/Anderson etc. to play beach instead. Its nice that Miles/Billy get to go to Australia, and I don't begrudge them that, but if the 5k it will cost USAVolleyball went to top athletes wouldnt that make more sense? Not knocking these guys in any way, but they arent top 15 players.

I've said in the past, I wish USAV would pair some older veteran players up with some of the up and coming players and subsidize the Vets. The Hyden/Bourne model is stuck in my head. I think USAV should ask and pay someone like Billy Allen or Loomis or Drost to play with these young guys. Which will get the young guys into MDs which also gets them guaranteed $$.

I think the issue is who the young guys are, rather than the support they currently get, although the two are certainly related. The players coming out of college are marginal athletes and guys like that can succeed, but they need to be Jake Gibb level skilled and consistent. If beach could get young guys like Russell we would be right back at the top of the heap. Russell/Anderson would be a top team in the world with 9 months of training. Instead we get a few very good but limited athletes (Taylor) and guys like Billy and Miles. If there were a way to guarantee money and international priority to these guys, I think the quality partners, at least on a Billy Allen level, would come naturally. Its harsh because some of these guys have put in a ton of time and effort but if I ran USAV and a top collegiate talent with great physical skills and drive came to me now, I would tell guys like Ryan that he was getting money and entry priority. I think USAV should see their role more as the coach of an international team than an equal opportunity support provider

Miller are some young players that USAV should be helping to support. There are players out there, but they are scattered. Need more people like Adam Roberts who can help support players while they are young.

I'd put Troy Field on that list ahead of most, that guy was killing everyone at the Huntington Halloween 4s tourney. Kid has insane hops I tell you.

Indoor Volleyball not only offers more money, but it's guaranteed. I think that's a big deal to these kids, unfortunately. A lot of times their food is paid for in team meals a few times a week, free lodging accommodations on travel for their games, they get free access to training rooms and trainers, some even get living accommodations taken care of for them. They don't have to worry about not getting paid if they get hurt. That is a really big deal in terms of these young kids making money.
Manhattan Beach winner takes home a split of $22,000, $11,000 each, how much do they pay for travel, for hotel, for food, etc? It's not bad money for a weekend, but with it not being guaranteed, only having so many opportunities to make money, and having to worry about having a disappointing tournament or even getting hurt, can't fault these guys at all for going indoor.
Takes a gutsy kid to choose Beach over Indoor if that option is available for them. Really love to see the Sean Rosenthal stories where they grow up playing on the beach, but even that you are limiting to a very small region of kids who even have that available for them.

Hasn't played much AVP.
