Shook not coming in earlier is a poor excuse. She was a top 10 recruit as a setter and I’m sure there are plenty of other freshmen setters who didn’t enroll in the spring to train with their teams To be fair, traditionally it’s been difficult for Texas’ setters to come in, unlearn everything they’ve learned in the past four years of club ball, and set like they’re in the 14’s.

there’s many many setters who don’t go in early & do just fine! Like who? thank you setters usually have most of the summer to get work in Shook had a really short time to get work in and she did ok not amazing but ok, she will for sure make strides in the off season. Plus the thing that gave her trouble was out of system plays which she just has to get used to them.

She was a top 10 recruit coming out of a club program that churns our top setters. Even if she “barely” had time with her hitters, it’s not like she didn’t know how to set. Also, I didn’t watch closely but there’s such thing as improvement over a season.

She was a Top 10 recruit by one recruiting service. And? Is that gospel? Is that supposed to guarantee success in college? She did improve over the season. Anyone who watched how she played at Florida in the season opener in late August knows she improved. Since you admit you didn't watch closely, why are you on here contributing with an uninformed opinion?

I applaud you because I saw improvement especially with sets to the right side, and she had some really higher level sets which shows glimpse of the setter she will become as she continues her college career.

Take Miley at Kentucky for example she came at the beginning of the summer which seems to be the usual case for all players.

Setters shouldn’t be held to a different standard bc they came in early or not. Frankly who cares. Shook came later than some, sure but I guess the Texas staff didn’t focus enough on improving their setter (or back row). There are plenty of fantastic true freshman setters. Are a couple weeks of practice early on really that pivotal?

I thought Texas did well this season. No matter if Shook was the number whatever recruit in the country she is still a freshman in a program with such high expectations. I think she needs to be cut some slack.

I think she needs to be cut some slack. I didn’t watch a ton of her play, but skill-wise I’m sure she’ll be fine. What I would be more concerned about is her demeanor. She seemed very out of place and it showed on her face. It seemed to permeate to the team when they were down. By no means is it all her fault, but I’m curious how much effect it has when your setter is very blank or emotionally absent on the surface. For those that have watched more of her than me, am I completely off-base?

For those that have watched more of her than me, am I completely off-base? I noticed this much more than her setting location. I also noticed some of her teammates visibly (and in one case, verbally) frustrated with her setting. However, the biggest standout to me was her demeanor.

You're a perfect example of a fan from another school (Stanford) who comes on this thread and offers absolutely nothing worthwhile when it comes to Texas volleyball. We get it; you don't think Shook improved. You already outed yourself as someone who didn't watch her closely throughout the season; so, your jaded opinion carries no weight. Anything else we can help you with this holiday season?
