Myself and other colleagues filed an age discrimination suit against a Jr. College. What a mess. We ended up settling. They paid our legal expenses and we each got $1000. I think we would have gotten more if we hung in, but we were tired of it and the bills from the lawyer every month. The only ones who win are the lawyers.

There is also a big difference between retiring by your own choice and "retiring" because somebody tells you not to come back in the office on Monday.
My dad was double-dipping (early retirement then back as a contractor). He got pretty upset when his employer told him they were not going to renew his contract. But within about six months I think he adjusted just fine. He's as busy as he ever was, except now he's doing things because he wants to do them instead of because of money.

4corner, your comments are yours to make, and so are mine. So tell me about Mick's financial situation. Where were you able to get such privileged information? I know the answer to both of those questions: straight out of your a**. A lot of older people don't want to retire. Its not financial, rather the image of getting up in the morning with nothing meaningful to do can be terrifying. Some people like going to work because it gives them purpose. Some are absolutely fine with sitting around waiting to go on a week long cruise in a year or so. Mick doesn't fit in that category I don't believe. Read his comments and it is absolutely clear, he's not ready for retirement. You don't like him, great, but don't make up lies because of your feelings. Forgive me, but coaching in the PAC 12 is not a “reason to get up in the morning” type of job. Lots of former athletes, coaches, give the “spend more time with my family” as reasons for retiring. Many of them are back in some capacity within a year. Competitive juices are tough to stop flowing. Sometimes you try to spend more time with your family, only to find out that your family does not want spend more time with you.

I've heard that a lot about people in professions where they are away from home often, like the military or pro baseball players. When they retire and start hanging around the house, it doesn't take the spouse too long to start wishing for the next deployment/roadtrip.

From the 50 Ways to Leave USC file.... Not So Quick Mick! He's still the top Trojan on the USC VB website Since they aren't renewing his contract, technically he is still head coach until June. As per contract. Seems USC is trying to finagle not having to pay out a contract breach. Wonder how that works legally if they announce and bring someone in before June? He could have other angles to sue them besides age discrimination.

Their site is showing the coaching staff for the 2017 season. It's not wrong.

The more important question, why SHOULD they have to leave? Harassment and discrimination are illegal. Shouldn't the person who is doing something WRONG be the one who should leave instead? Unless, of course, you don't think age discrimination is wrong. But if that's the case, say it. Don't hide behind "why would he want to stay?" say it explicitly: age discrimination is acceptable and so he is going to have deal with it. But if you agree that age discrimination is wrong, then why hold him responsible? Similarly, if you don't think this is a case of age discrimination (and that is something he is going to have show in court), then make that argument. But seriously, if HE thinks it is age discrimination, then it makes perfect sense why he'd want to stay. If that is what he believes, then he believes he is in the right and the others are acting improperly. Why should he pay for their improper behavior? Unless reasoning given is an explicit- "you are too old to do this job", I don't buy the whole age discrimination argument in this matter. Even arguments alluding to it such as your methods are too old school, or we want new blood doesn't pass the age discrimination test when it comes to an athletics program, IMO, but this is just public opinion, I haven't done any case law research or what questions a jury may need to answer (though this is all gonna settle anyway, assuming there is a suit). I have no interest in arguing the merits of an age discrimination case. I was just explaining why, if a person feels that they have been harassed or discriminated against, "they should just leave their job" is not the appropriate response. This is a mindset that needs to change.

So 3 assistants and not a single female? As a male coach, I cannot imagine getting a DI job and not taking a female assistant. Is that normal in DI? I am a bit surprised.
