I may have inadvertently started this argument by mentioning that USC never appealed to me. To be fair, lots of schools don't appeal to me: schools in the Deep South (e.g., Alabama, Georgia, Ole Miss, LSU, Arkansas, Clemson, Tennessee) schools in New Mexico schools in Arizona BYU Idaho Notre Dame schools with names that begin "St. _________" Nebraska the Dakotas Pittsburgh West Virginia Wyoming Maryland Rutgers And, most ironically, the one school that didn't appeal to me as a high schooler is now the school associated with my favorite volleyball program: U. of Hawaii I thought you considered ASU when you were getting your Masters? BYU has fully caffeinated Coke products now, btw. Wow. Welcome to 1957.

The question is whether or not fully-caffeinated Mormons is a good thing.

"May not"? Are you suggesting that it may be the school's fault? USC has done a ton to IMPROVE the neighborhood. Pepperdine, on the other hand, ran away and where their old school was is easily one of the most dangerous areas in Los Angeles today. When someone moves to a nicer neighborhood, you consider it "running away"?

When someone moves to a nicer neighborhood, you consider it "running away"? White flight was a real thing - and it wasn't just Pepperdine. The Supreme Court overruled racist housing practices and blacks were allowed to live outside of specific boundaries. When minorities moved in, most of the current residents decided to leave. This is why I use the phrase running away. This was buried in history and not as well known but a Pepperdine public safety officer shot and killed a 15 year old black honors student who had permission to be on Pepperdine's campus. It was a cold blooded murder. Peppedine did very little to nothing to try to resolve racial tensions. Pepperdine tells their story as one of "triumph" as they moved from South LA to Malibu but has no admission in all of the problems they caused and they INCREASED racial tension in the area. If you want to take the time there's a lot of interesting material on this, but you have to do some digging, and you won't find it through Pepperdine's website.

Maybe I came into this thread too late, but am I to understand that Mick Haley was somehow involved with the death of a young black Pepperdine student and was thus asked to resign?

Normally I don't like to go too off topic - but it's the off-season. Back to Mick - it's an absolute injustice the way it was handled. Lynn Swann is a douche. USC did NOT have a big name ready to take over. USC players are more fond of Mick than most will think (save a few exceptions). USC's team chemistry was miles better than it was in 2008. Mick Haley led USC to 12 top-10 finishes in his 17 year tenure. Mick was not asked to resign. He asked for a 10 year contract in 2013 - BUT USC convinced him to ask for just 5 years - and after that's up, ask for more money. Instead, He asked for an extension this year and the AD gave him the run around and avoided him. The whole situation is %*$#ty

If you want to take the time there's a lot of interesting material on this, but you have to do some digging, and you won't find it through Pepperdine's website. I am 60 years old and have lived in the L.A. area my entire life. I lived through the Rodney King riots (was pretty young during the Watts Riots), the LAPD atrocities, school busing and white flight. That said, why should Pepperdine bare any responsibility to what happened in the neighborhood after they left? USC looked long and hard into moving to Orange County in the 70's. Back then, you could buy lots of land very cheap (hard to imagine now). When they stayed in South Central, they sold it as "not wanting to abandon the neighborhood". What they really did not want to abandon was their political clout at City Hall and with the L.A. Times. As an aside, it would be interesting to speculate how things would be different today if USC had moved to Orange County 40 years ago. How different would USC be? How would the landscape of Orange County be different? Would UCI have become USC's biggest rival (not likely)?

Hey now! I had to defend my school! Lol Defend your school all you like, but just don't be reflexively defensive. It's ok to admit to imperfections. I like USC and I think its a great school...just not it's neighborhood.
