I think that the problem is that his expertise is so limited (is being a philosopher an expertise?). I don't buy that he's going to be able to compete with other coaches in establishing ties with clubs or in recruiting. He's too soft-spoken, not enough cache and not enough accomplishments. So, he's going to have to bring in a high level recruiting assistant and a high level trainer, at a school that was too cheap to hire a better coach. You make it sound like he has been sitting in an armchair, smoking a pipe and philosophizing over the past 12 years, when instead he was a D1 head coach, D1 AC, and juniors club coach. He is too soft spoken? What does that even mean? You don’t like the hire. We get it. But your points should be based in reality, not just made up. Give me a break. How much do you know about him (or what went on behind the scenes) to base your expectations on reality? It's all commentary, analysis, experience, speculation, and sometimes a bit of insider knowledge that fuels these forums, and that's entirely appropriate. You may feel some sense of loyalty to defend or uplift your program, but I certainly don't have that obligation.

Carry on with your ridiculous speculation though. Maybe he does not actually know how to coach and will recite Socrates to the girls as you seem to think.

Sure, he can sit under a tree with the team and free up the gym for extra practice for basketball team. Win-Win. Of course he's going to have his chance. That's what we're here for.

I don't think that the program needs a rebuild by any means, but I do think this will be good for USC. I think a lot of people will be pleasantly surprised with his coaching and recruiting abilities. Maybe he is soft spoken, but I don't see a fault in that. It'll definitely be a change from Mick in that regard. Crouch's former players have a lot of respect for him and I don't know if you could always say that about Mick. Also has a great reputation amongst other D1 coaches.

This is will be a pump of energy and fresh air into the program. Go Trojans!

Yup, that's what teachers who become coaches do, they sit around under trees and contemplate life with their students. Most soft-spoken and trained educators make really poor coaches, like a Dunning or a Wooden. I think everyone well understands that the primary reason most are here is to badmouth and impugn their rivals and plant seeds that a Lanier or a Sun is unhappy and should transfer to the "right" school. I think you realize well enough that in this particular case, it wasn't necessary for anyone to impugn the program. It was a self immolation.

Here's a thought...
Crouch gets hired at USC... Haley takes "interim" job at Portland... USC falls to the bottom of PAC 12... Portland wins WCC (of course beating BYU), makes it to final four. #mickmicdrop

This was pretty damn random no lie. But I also think USC needed something new. A fresh young face might just get things going for USC

Some kind of continuity would help, but if he becomes a KEPT coach by the supervisors he will be disaster for the program. How could we tell the difference between disasters?

Coach crouch is on the recruiting trail today. Watching Karen Owes at the MLK in Phoenix.

Look USC will atract competitive recruits even if they hire a burrito to be HC. But stop beclowning yourself by saying they need to hire a "fresh young face" to get things going, because Mick Haley got them going all the way to the Elite 8 (have you ever?), and his little old bald head probably still has more volleyball knowledge in it than 90% of the D1 coaches out there. And I suspect we haven't heard the last of Mick yet.

Also, Haley didn't just take them to the Final 8. They had a match point, but Florida was able to side out. They were really close.
