[/quote] of course. then there'd be no question as to what the wahine can (or can't) accomplish. it would really solidify the veracity of the rankings. We shouldn't have conferences. the teams should be able to play whoever they want. on an off note -- deesing reminds me a lot of Laruen Duggins. Slim, athletic and quick. Seals the block very well and hits an unusually heavy ball for someone of her stature. Only thing is that she's about 2 years ahead of Duggins, for Duggins only broke out in her junior year. I'm looking forward to great things from Deesing.

What facility will U$C host the 1st and 2nd rounds in? Lyon?

Elise, by the way, has a great future at the Beach I might add....redshirting this year, back for 4 more!

I watched the match this afternoon on FOX. This was definitely a very high level of volleyball! U$C seems to be playing very well right now, and either team could have won....both of these teams could end up in Long Beach in three weeks! I would be lying if I didn't admit that I was impressed with the play of both teams, and having seen U$C play earlier in the year(not impressed then) they seem to be "jellin" at the right time. The play of their libero was superb!

Yep. Seilhamer was very good. I've never understood why she was getting so much criticism.
Venski is pretty steady, too. Amazing that this is only her first year of extensive playing time. Talk about a loaded program.
Still don't know about their setting, however.

With the arms that U$C has I really don't think that they need great or even very good setting. If their passing is on all their setter(s) need to do is to chuck it up there cause they have some very experienced, big, quick, and powerful hitters.....they could make just about any above average setter look very very good! Setting won't be U$C's problem!

It will be against teams that can dig them...

Seilhamer got some negative press early on because her backrow play (especially passing) had been very inconsistent (there was a match or two when even Freeburg was outdigging her), plus a number of USC fans got spoiled by Nicole Davis. With more matches, Seilhamer has gotten more consistent in her plays, and coming into her own. She has been tagged one of the most promising liberos out of PR, and she is showing some glimpses of that.
One major improvement that I have noticed (in addition to better passing) is her ability to dig hard balls coming her way. Previously, these balls would just deflect off her arms into the stands. Her digging numbers (around 5.6 dpg) are certainly better than Davis (who averaged 4.1 dpg). USC needs Seilhamer to mop up the balls in the backcourt to give the team more than a fighting chance to defend their NCAA title.

The Women of Troy is certainly glad that she chose to come to USC.to

LBSU's slide began with the decision to let Hochevar set. They would have been much better with Jen Bowman setting and BH staying at opposite. Or a 6-2.
I still don't understand that move, unless it was just BG keeping a promise.
Too bad for JBow, if so...

I think Freeburg is not the right kind of setter for Mick's system. She needs to be somewhere where she can run the whole show.

I've been one of Seilhammer's detractors. In the matches I saw earlier in the season, Deborah was passing the majority of balls to the 10 foot line which is unacceptable. I'm really happy if she has improved. I also didn't think Nicole Davis was going to be that good after seeing her in her first year starting, but boy did she turn out great. I hope the same will be true for Seilhammer. It will be important for USC to improve its setting in order to advance far in the tourney. They have to be able to connect w/ the middles, to create a good set when the passes aren't perfect, and to fake out opposing blockers by not being too predictable. No offense to Freeburg, but if she was good enough to run the show (on her own) she would. Anderson was good enough to run a 5-1.

Seems to me USC runs a 6-2 for two (very good) reasons:
1) They have terrific players that need to be on the court at opposite
2) They have a bunch of short setters
Am I wrong?

That sounds about right. The 6-2 is a bit more of a necessity now since the current setters are very short and not very athletic. A couple years ago, USC would have been perfectly fine using either Anderson or Lindquist in a 5-1 as both were not liabilities at the net. I'm guessing that in a few of the more shaky matches, Haley would have gone w/ a 5-1 w/ just Dillon had he thought she could go through the front row w/o losing a lot of points due to her blocking liability.

BiK I appreciate your "MAN OF ALL SEASONS" approach. I am shocked and awed that you not only read, but also respond to other threads that do not concern the great state of Hawai`i and The Wahine. You Sir, are the THOMAS MOORE of all posters. This an open invitation for you and Brian Gimmillaro to crash at my pad for the FF in Long Beach where The Wahine nation will congregate. Cool for me but I think Brian G might be busy pulling valet duty that weekend.
