Is this really a discussion? This is really a discussion EVERY YEAR. Unfortunately, it's always the SAME discussion every year, between the people who think spandex shorts are sexualized and the people who have a functioning brain. (Apologies to the OP, who actually only asked why some players on a team were wearing a different length than other players.)

When diving on the floor etc. The spandex shorts are less likely to have a wardrobe malfunction.

Some religious schools don't even wear the spandex. Like Franciscan University. If I know my scripture as well as I think I do, it clearly says that Jesus played indoor volleyball in spandex. And so, this is clearly a deviation. I implore the Franciscan scholars to gather the leadership for a roundtable debate!

I don't know why black is so common when there are so many other colors available. In Ohio, Miami U wears red and Wright St wears green. At the D3 level Capital alternates between purple and dark grey, while Heidelberg wears bright orange. There's something to be said for variety. I would say it's because it's the easiest to replace if there is an issue or a player loses her tights. You don't have to worry about inventory levels and if it's a "I need this right now scenario." Someone can run out to nearly any store and find a pair that will suffice.

Kinda weird though, as it is my understanding that Franciscan is Catholic, and most Catholic Schools don't seem to share their concerns with regards to the spandex.

Yeah I usually don't think of Catholic as being particularly strict, at least compared to some of the very strict Christian organizations in the country. CoC, LDS, Southern Baptists, Episcopalians, etc.

Still no answer though to the original question about why some players are wearing leggings as opposed to shorts. Is it medical? Religious? Personal comfort or discomfort? Hart started wearing hers last year but there has never been anything about why. She does not appear to be trying to make a statement since she has never said anything publicly that I have seen. I am only interested in the why of it.

Maybe the more globally conservative "Anglicans" but certainly not the American wing which accepts female & gay priests, and allows priests to marry and have families.

Tell that to the 13 year olds who ask every time they see it and ask why a certain player is wearing what is essentially a different uniform from the rest of the team. Once again, if it is a medical condition or for religious reasons, awareness of why is not a bad thing.

I don't think they HAVE to explain themselves. I'm genuinely interested in why.
