As everyone waits to see the Dance invitation list, the three most competitive conferences are also getting ready to announce their POYs. Here are my guesses and their conference match stats (which seem to carry more weight than the entire season stats):
Big 12: Mira Topic, Texas, 5.84kpg, *.315%, *6.42points/game Big 12 alt: Melissa Elmer, Nebraska, 2.98kpg, .363%, 4.27ppg, 2.00blocks/game Big Ten: Stacy Gordon, Ohio State, 7.00kpg, .331%, 7.53ppg Pac-10: Ogonna Nnamani, Stanford, 6.28kpg, .352%, 6.88ppg ______ *Couldn't find Topics conference-only % and ppg, so used full season

Here is her quote: "In my opinion, [Pavan] is the player of the year," A&M coach Laurie Corbelli said. "She is the difference maker, and she has talent above all others in this country."

I realize you probably weren't able to find the conference-only dig stats for Nnamani or Topic. However, Gordon's conference-only stats are 4.06 digs/game. Topic's overall stats are 3.28 digs/game and Nnamani has 2.10 digs/game.

It will be interesting to see how the Big 12 vote goes. With Pavan probably on most ballets as FOY, I'm wondering if the coaches will pick another player for their POY vote - I'd guess they might and in that case I think Topic will win the POY award.
That should make Elmer and Pavan mad enough take them all the way to the championship match. ;D

When was the last time a freshman won POY on either national level or in any of the more prominent conferences?
Did Logan Tom, Misty May, Kerrie Walsh, or Kim Willoughby even win POY their respective freshman years?

Pavan has been named Big 12 POW once this year; Topic has made it 4 times. Kinda hard to overlook that. If Topic and my other guesses do make their respective Conference POYs, then in each case the POY would come from the conference runners-up (with OSU being tied for second with Minnesota).

Yeah, if my numbers are correct, of the ten Big 12 POW awards so far this year, Texas has 5, Texas A&M has 2, Texas Tech has 1, (conference office in Texas) leaving two for the rest of the conference and Nebraska only got one of them. See a pattern? Too bad we aren't good enough to play in the Big Texas Conference.

I'm pretty sure both Pavan and Saleaumua made it this year. My bad - Jen Oct. 25 - also found 2 from KSU instead of just 1 so that is 3 Texas schools 8, eight other conference schools 4

OK, this is my first post, so bear with me...
I just listened to the A&M postgame quotes on their website, and Laurie Corbelli said that he (Cook) did not nominate Pavan for POY. So it looks like she won't be getting that award.
BTW, I'm a long-time lurker, and really enjoy the comments & info provided!

I'm sure he is pushing for Elmer and probably thinks Pavan has a better shot at FOY.

Did Logan Tom, Misty May, Kerrie Walsh, or Kim Willoughby even win POY their respective freshman years? Don't think it's ever happened for the major conferences; none of those mentioned above did it. But in some of the mid-majors or smaller conf I don't think it's that uncommon for a really good player to come in and dominate their freshman year; and many transfer to a larger school after that.
