I have a feeling that is going to be the case. However, I am not sure I can go another year watching Wookie struggle, especially in serve receive. Here's hoping for improvement. From the little I know both Kinney and Gilk can pass the ball. The good thing is that next year we will have some help in the back row from Garr and Gilk. If Wuch’s passing doesn’t improve much, she will probably play 3 rotation front row. There are some options next year. Look at the funny guy thinking Keegan will let the top OH in his mind only play 3 rotations

The USA camps haven't really helped much and Mckenna Wucherer seams to be nursing an injury. The body needs time to heal. That said, I still think she had better back court defense and blocking than Alex Acevedo who has been better serving and passing. However, that can change by next year. Both are good players that I look forward to watching them at Minnesota playing with our new players and returners next year.

To have a better team Kelly Kinney beats them both out.

I know a lot of talk is circulating across multiple threads about the outlook for next year along with the tea thread (stucky to MN). So I’m curious what they can really work with in the portal.
Disclaimer: I think any talk about transfers is premature - minus ones who have already noted their intent to transfer (Stowers, for example). More-so curious how many roster spots we actually have with the 18 limit.
I think first and foremost we need a quality backup setter, a DS/L, and a MB. If there is room, an opposite would be nice.

I agree, but I would be cautious about handing the position over to Swenson out of the gate. I know she is the anointed one, but have also seen how quickly folks can turn on someone if things aren’t going well. (See Shaff notes from the last 5 years) There needs to be a blend of a competitive gym and a balance of a role setter as well. I’m scared about what happened at Texas this year as it seemed to have shaken the confidence of a setter or two at times down there. Role clarity will be imperative with any incoming setter from the portal. I’m confident Kelsay can set expectations appropriately with anyone coming in.

Are you hoping they get a setter in the portal who is better than Swenson? I’m just clarifying so I can reasonably respond.

Next year Chloe Ng is our only back up setter. Would like to have more than one.

The best setter in the Minn gym should run the offense next year, whomever that may be. No one knows how good Swenson is yet at the D1 level. If they bring in someone to either push her or be better than her, I support that. The coaching staff should set clear expectations with anyone they bring in as it will be a critical addition. They could go a couple of different ways here. Bring in someone with a ton of high level experience already (call it a Stucky hypothetically of course ) or could go with someone at a successful mid major who has proven themselves but would be comfortable backing up Stella.

Gotcha. I don’t disagree. Just was a little confused by the initial post. I just don’t see cook portal shopping over her, unless he really feels like she’s not there yet.

I think the quality of transfer setter we get in the off season will be a big tell.

Although, we have yet to see her in a match in the regular season, so it’s hard to gauge. I would assume by the end of the regular season he should have a good idea of what kind of player wants to bring here (and hope they want to come here, too).

IMO, the Gophers should first take any player who would be an upgrade at any position and, if not available, then go for depth at middle blocker or setter. Reality, Minnesota is not the program that attracts all the top players like some poster(s) seem to think so then you take the best available where you need depth. That being said, I sure am glad that Kali Engeman and Alex Avecedo choose to be Gophers. I also don't think we will have much more than one scholarship to give this year.

Minnesota attracts very good players, always a top 10 recruiting class. Beginning in 2025, 18 players are allowed to be on roster...in essence, 18 scholarship players. There are 12 returners, and 4 incoming frosh players, so if staff wants to max out the roster, there are 2 spots. Clearly, a high level setter transfer appears to be a priority.
