Positive, yes. Is it going to be an easy season? No. The points the ‘starters’ gave up were on poor communication and mental errors, especially the younger players. I agree with the above poster about Jhenna. She’s solid, but had some head scratcher moments, especially with Brionne. It’s early days, but the tests come early. This team has a lot of upside, and if they play to the potential they showed today consistently, they’ll be fine. i said that because i came away from the scrimmage with the opposite feeling. the scrimmage did not inspire confidence. What were the things you saw that concerned you?

First a quick picture of the players gathered around Jerrit. Also gives a height perspective of the players:
My thoughts on the scrimmage:
Skyler Fields - too good to be considered a redshirt candidate. Not saying that she was ever going to be.
Molly Phillips - you can't coach 6' 5". Great on blocks. And did you notice in 3rd and 4th sets she was also playing right side along with Asjia ?
Unfair instant assessment: Phillips > O'Neil; Makes me wonder about the logjam at MB coming up next year
None of the veteran players improved significantly enough to notice. Having a couple of balls drop between players who say, "I thought you had that", that always happens.
Right now, gut tells me this is an Elite Eight team.
So yeah, pessimist at this point in the season.

if this is what we can expect, this team will not move past the elite eight

I guess my response would be the things I was worried about coming in were assuaged by the scrimmage. Passing looked much better than it has at scrimmages past. Communication for balls dropping in seams will get better. The connection between Jhenna and Brionne will improve, and hopefully we’ll develop a better slide attack with Asjia. Blocking was solid for this point in the year. So was the connection on both pins (minus the stretch of tipping in the 3rd which looked more like a fatigue issue). Some things to remember- this scrimmage is a week earlier than usual, right? They’ve only been back in the gym officially for a week. If you’re expecting a tournament ready team, disappointment abounds. I think this team has a higher ceiling than it has at this point in the last couple of years.

That’s it...

Texas Volleyball posted highlights. It featured four people: - Micaya White - Brionne Butler - Molly Phillips - Skylar Fields That’s it... No fantastic digs, serves, or dramatic saves. So, that's about right. I hope they eventually post stats. I want to see how many blocks are credited to Phillips. We sat behind and above the scoring table and could see someone actively updating the stat tracker page, so I know that information is....somewhere?

I just mean it’s interesting/telling that Phillips was highlighted (and I think one was an attack that hit the antennae, but that might’ve been off the block)and not O’Neal. Also not Eggleston.

Longhorn Network schedule has volleyball in less than an hour from now. Will it be a replay of the o/w scrimmage?

Thanks for the links. So it's as I thought, Phillips was in on 4 blocks, included in switching back and forth between "Orange" and "White". Got great blocking instincts from what I saw.

I know this was a scrimmage, and it’s intended to get the nerves out before the first actual match. The play clearly got better throughout.
This is not a top 4 team in the country now, and they won’t be at the end of the season. Jhenna still looks like a sub setter. Connections were terrible with the middles even for the beginning of the season. The pins were good, so they probably get them to the Elite 8. I see a repeat of last year. They won’t host because they’re going to lose at least 2 if not three matches in the first five, and it’s hard to see them go through conference undefeated. TCU or Baylor will get them once. Will be very interesting next year once Naomi gets there. That will be a top 4 team.
