Mizzou does it again beating host Dayton in four, 25-22, 17-25, 25-16, 25-10. Great day for the Tigers! Fought through some adversity. Just popping in to say how incredibly impressed I am with the play of Kylie Deberg. She is head and shoulders the best player at this Dayton tournament. Both Michigan and Dayton went after her in the back row and she consistently answered the bell. Terminal in-system hitter from anywhere on the court and solid defender. What a weapon. I texted my friend yesterday that at 6-5 she is a better back row defender than any DS or libero on Michigan's team. Terrific all around athlete.

I wasn't able to watch either of the matches, but one of the questions for me, as a fan, was whether Kylie would be able to take that next step this year. She was certainly not in the back row for her defense last year. While it looks good for Mizzou in an early season test, I would remind Michigan fans it's way too early for the sky to be falling. I'm anxious to see how Mizzou fares against Baylor, who beat #4 Wisconsin yesterday, in a couple of weeks. Again it will still be early, but it will be interesting as a short-term barometer. If Mizzou wins that one, it will be nice to know that they have the capability to go toe-to-toe with some of the better Big10 teams.

Mississippi State takes out the broom and sweeps Southern Mississippi (-17, -19, -23) to sweep their 2nd Invitational. Big Congrats to freshman Callie Minshew and MacKenzie Jordan who had to "grow up" and step into starting roles. #HailState

LSU splits the weekend with loss to Penn State and win over Iowa State. Standouts are the freshmen Rose and Hill! Rose is an incredible talent as she led the team in assists/digs/blocks (she's 5'6" kids!) in the Iowa State match. Hill is an impressive 6 rotation player and was the more consistent OH this weekend. Still need work on the middle connections between now and conference. Defensively, they are very solid as Walters is a great addition to the back row; has a real nice serve too. Two weeks to work out the kinks but very excited to see what this team can become!!

SEC Week 2 Awards:
SEC Offensive Player of the Week - Missouri's Kylie Deberg, a junior outside hitter from Hudson, Iowa, earned a spot on the 2019 Dayton Invitational All-Tournament Team after averaging 6.32 points and 5.36 kills and posting a .510 hitting percentage in a 3-0 week for the Tigers. Deberg opened the weekend with 15 kills and a .636 hitting percentage in Missouri's sweep of No. 14 Michigan. She capped the week with a career-high 25 kills and a .575 hitting percentage against Northern Illinois.
SEC Co-Defensive Players of the Week - Ole Miss' Aubrey Sultemeier, a sophomore middle blocker from Fredericksburg, Texas, recorded 17 total blocks to help lead the Rebels to win the Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Volleyball Classic. Sultemeier tied her career high of eight total blocks in Sunday's win over host Tulane. Her 17 total blocks ranks second in program history for a three-match span in the rally scoring era.
South Carolina's Claire Edwards, a senior middle blocker from Columbia, S.C., registered 17 total blocks for the Gamecocks at the UCF Challenge this past weekend. Edwards posted a career-high eight total blocks in the four-set win over Kansas, and then tallied six total blocks in the sweep over Albany on Sunday.
SEC Setter of the Week - Missouri's Andrea Fuentes, a redshirt sophomore from San Juan, Puerto Rico, recorded 123 assists as the Tigers owned a .434 hitting percentage at the 2019 Dayton Invitational. Fuentes had 30 assists in Mizzou's win over No. 14 Michigan, with the Tigers hitting .507 in the three-match victory. She went on to post a season-high 55 assists against Northern Illinois, the fourth 50+ assist match of her collegiate career.
SEC Freshman of the Week - Ole Miss' Anna Bair, a freshman outside hitter from St. Louis, Mo., averaged 3.82 points and 3.18 kills per set as the Rebels won the Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Volleyball Classic. Defensively, Bair tallied 20 digs and seven total blocks, en route to earning a spot on the All-Tournament Team

Good weekend for Ole Miss! Got to see some streams of their matches (not last weekend's, but the first weekend's), and I was impressed with the heat that Bair can bring.

I’m really excited for the opponents Kentucky faces this weekend because although they shouldn’t be much competition, both FGCU and Cleveland State were the closest universities when I lived in Florida and Ohio. The only thing that interests me about the Indiana match is what the attendance will look like with the football team hosting Florida that night.

Definitely pleased for Ole Miss. Was a little concerned about their 0-3 start, especially the Rice sweep.

The only thing that interests me about the Indiana match is what the attendance will look like with the football team hosting Florida that night. If Indiana serves like they can, Kentucky’s streaking serve receive could make this a compelling match. IU has balanced attacking and an improved defense. If nothing else, the girls seem to be buying in the Aird’s leadership. Kentucky definitely has the experience and talent to win this match, but I think it’ll be closer than what people think. This is far from a for-sure win for Kentucky.
