Bower sisters destined to be part of BYU's NCAA volleyball tournament run and beyondBYU freshmen Whitney, left, and Morgan Bower were born to play volleyball at Brigham Young University -- it's in their blood. Kim Raff for ESPN There's no doubt both sisters were born to play volleyball for BYU. It's in their blood. Their mother, Caroline [Steuer] Bower, was a member of the BYU volleyball team in the late 1990s. Their father, Danny, played on the basketball team, and his father, Wayne, played BYU football in the early 1970s. Caroline and Danny met while students and married before Caroline's junior year. www.espn.com/college-sports/story/_/id/28175913/bower-sisters-destined-part-byu-ncaa-volleyball-tournament-run-beyond

Multiple stories about BYU women's volleyball today, in addition to the ones already mentioned: 1. Darnell Dickson wrote an article about Lake and Miller for the Provo Herald. 2. Brandon Guerney wrote an article about Lake for the Deseret News. 3. Norma Gonzales wrote an article about Miller for the Salt Lake Tribune.

Wow. Definitely unexpected, but I'm never that surprised when a BYU student or devout LDS person chooses to serve a mission. Off the top of my head, I can't remember a women's volleyball player of her caliber going on a mission, but there are other elite athletes like All-American runner Erica Birk who have. Since she's leaving in early February, she should be back in time for the 2021 season (18 months puts her return in early August). Though it will be interesting to see how Olmstead handles her return. Speaking from experience, Gneiting won't have much time to practice or play volleyball while she's gone.

I was thinking about this very thing a few weeks ago, wondering if any of the current or incoming players would serve a mission. And yet, I'm still surprised. It's been a while, as I think the last one was Hannah Robison, who played her final season in 2016.

Someone once told me that there have been only 2 Division 1 VB players out of like 30 that have ever return and Robison wasnt even planned that she would return. She had her senior night before she left on her mission. He said something about an age change has made this more rare... I don't know who the 2nd one that returned...but that is a bad %.

Sure, but how many of those others were All-Americans or the National Freshman of the Year? I'd be surprised if Gneiting doesn't come back.
