Just got back from American Sports Center (ASC) in Anaheim. Today was mandatory #3 for 15s in the SCVA. The top teams were all there and got to see lots of 2023 talent. Obviously the two big names from a program perspective at Wave and TStreet. They were the 1's on court A1 and A2 respectively. Got to watch them both a bit. They are both really strong. Wave plays a faster, more interesting offense. Lot's of quick sets, slides, etc. Their setter (Quill?) is just great. Jump sets every play with amazing balance and stability in the air. She has great placement. Height...not so much, but just amazing to watch her go. TStreet also looked good. They are just big, tall, long girls at every position. Pretty much top to bottom these kids can play. In terms of stand-outs? Smith at middle had some great plays. Their outsides all hit really well. Opposites put up strong blocks. Which team is better? I would like to pick Wave because I appreciate the offensive speed and complexity...but TStreet is just powerfull. Toss up until they play...which won't be too long, I am sure. Next level teams are teams like Coast, Mizuno and A4. A4 also had a very strong setter...she had decent height. Didn't get a name. Anyhow...some real talent in that building. Looks like Surfside will be the #1 seed followed by Miz Long Beach as the #2 overall seeds for Mandatory 1, Division 1 coming up. Looks like TStreet was well over 2 on points, they should be the 1.

She’s not long and lean so most people will question how tall she is... at 14/15 she still has room to grow though. Last year that Mizuno Long Beach team played in a preseason tournament at Long Beach state and they played a team of recent former players and Mele was matched up against recent Purdue graduate 6’5 right side Sheridan Atkinson... when I tell you that she held her own.... she will have NO problem in the “big” league! Looks like a big time arm hitting rockets like Plummer, but I do wonder, like you, about her height. Club heights are usually inflated by an inch or two. 95% of females will not grow anymore after they reach that age.

I am not sure if Jordyn Byrd is playing club this year, she is not on any of OTVA's rosters and did not move over to Top Select.

No surprise here but Stanford and Nebraska I think are going to be jousting for the #1 overall class. I would give the edge to Stanford because they should have more scholarships to offer. The Kendall Kipp class will have exhausted their eligibility (for the most part) and the Cardinal could have up to 5 available scholarships for 2023.
Nebraska looks like they’ll have 3 scholarships to work with and the response from this class has been tremendous. They’ll have to turn away some outstanding talent. It’s too bad they won’t have more room because there’s plenty of enthusiasm toward the NU program right now.

Yes, you are correct, when I looked at the results sheet this weekend, it must not have been updated yet.

Are there any top 2024 players to keep an eye on this weekend? Of course. Just follow the coaches, it will be clear who they are watching.

Do many coaches attend the showcase in Vegas or are they all salivating over at NIT?

interesting...I know she has possibly the best ball control in the class but she’s a phenomenal hitter... where’d you hear this? That Mizuno team is basically the Redondo Union team...they are very strong. We played them a couple times in High School ball and even with losing seniors, they will remain strong. MCB is a freshman, so Redondo and Mizuno have a great one for years. Not sure if anyone got her to commit prior to rules change. I think Mele may be the only Redondo kid on that Mizuno 16's team. The two best are LB Poly kids, (Faumuina, McGinest) several Mater Dei kids, then sprinkle in a bunch of high schools gives you the 16's team. Redondo was great cause Mele was solid, but the 3 Mizuno 18's players (Miner/Iosia/Ricks) were monsters for them as well. Also Mele is going to be an interesting recruit for colleges. Incredible arm and ball control, but I agree she's more 5'11" than 6'1" without the hops to go with it. She can play with anyone but touching below 10' will make her a blocking liability big time in the front row.

Are there any top 2024 players to keep an eye on this weekend? Haven't seen them personally but there is a lot of buzz about Olivia and Stella Swenson (Sam Selliger Swensons sisters) on Northern Lights

Do many coaches attend the showcase in Vegas or are they all salivating over at NIT? People still waste their time and money at those showcases? I think you may see some D2 D3 Coaches there if you’re lucky.

There are some great players in this class for sure. Some to watch imo :
Lib : laney Choboy. Hands down the best libero in this class I think. Absolutely unreal for her age. She would be a really good 2021 libero rn and she’s a freshman. Mia Maloney (younger sister of Kenzie) has impressed me as well. OH : Mele and Sydney helmers (6’3 from kiva 15 red) stand out the most to me. Mele is very advanced for her age. Helmers is tall, quick, and very fluid and athletic, she’ll be a big time recruit. MB : I really don’t know many MBs in this class but nya Bunton (6’3 MB kiva 15 red) is VERY good and has interest from top schools.
That kiva team is very good, 3 potential senior aces on that team, 2 potential top 15 recruits imo.

She definitely needs to get up higher but I wouldn’t say just yet she’ll be a liability... I remember John Cook , last year, I think talking about how Foecke as a Jr/Sr wasn’t even touching 10ft.
