2020 AVCA DIVISION III REGION COACHES OF THE YEAR
The following coaches have been selected by their regions as AVCA Region Coaches of the Year. Each of the honorees will represent their region on the AVCA National Coach of the Year ballot.
EAST REGION COACH OF THE YEAR
Jack Wilson, Rutgers-Newark
2020 Record: 17-1, 4-0 CVC
First year as head coach of the Scarlet Raiders…Won 16 in a row to begin the season for the best start in program history…Led the conference in team hitting percentage (.295), kills per set (13.39), assists per set (12.51), and points per set (17.51)…Started the season unranked in the NVA/AVCA Coaches Poll, but ascended to No. 6 in the most recent national rankings…As an unranked team, they swept then-No. 3 Stevens on February 8 in Hoboken…Wilson was a three-year captain as a right side hitter at George Mason University.
NORTH REGION COACH OF THE YEAR
Jose Pina, NYU
2020 Record: 13-3, 4-2 UVC
This season was Pina’s 27th leading the Violets…On February 25, they achieved their first No. 1 national ranking since March 21, 2011 (entered the season at No. 13 in the NVA/Division III Coaches Poll)…Won their first 12 matches to start this year’s campaign…Landed more players on the UVC All-Conference Team (four) than any other program…Finished the season first in the UVC in team hitting percentage (.334) and blocks per set (2.05).
NORTHEAST REGION COACH OF THE YEAR
Charlie Sullivan, Springfield
2020 Record: 19-2
Sullivan completed his 22nd season at the helm of the Pride…Spent every week of the season ranked either No. 1 or No. 2 in the NVA/AVCA Coaches Poll…Their 111 lifetime No. 1 rankings are just four behind Juniata for the most in Division III history…Rank first nationally in team hitting percentage (.364), and second in aces per set (2.51) and win percentage (.905)…Ended the season winning 18 of their final 19 sets.
WEST REGION COACH OF THE YEAR
Dan Ames, Aurora
2020 Record: 12-4, 2-1 NACC
In his first year with Aurora…This was the Spartans’ first winning season in their third year of existence…Won nine of their first 10 matches…Picked up their first AVCA ranking in program history when they checked in at No. 15 on February 4, 2020…Former head coach at Dominican University, where in 2017 he won the AVCA Coach of the Year leading the Stars.
