Seems like a perfect situation to call Mick Haley and ask him to fill in this semester, see how he likes it, maybe make it permanent.

But I don't think I would leave a Siberian gulag for anywhere in Missouri, to be honest.

I realize most of us are purely speculating on what triggered this right now.
I can see it from the point of view that by waiting this late, it probably prevents several players (current or incoming) from strongly considering entering their names in the transfer portal. Just not much time to evaluate their options, and for other schools to have openings. Hope this isn't the case as it is truly unfair to the players who might have been blindsided by this abrupt resignation.

So, maybe a retired coach from the Midwest?

There is no need to speculate. As the Mizzou fans with sources in the program have already stated, it's a tactic to force Mizzou's hand into handing the program over to Josh and Molly. Even the Hardy Boys could solve this one without anyone being kidnapped.

I feel like if there were anything shady going down, the whole staff would be out. Kinda hard to keep Josh and Molly out of anything shady especially when they’re family. I personally think they just wanted to make sure the Taylor’s had a chance to prove themselves

I don't know that people need to look too much into this or speculate on motive at this point. The timing is odd for sure, but Joshua Taylor has been heavily involved in recruiting so I don't think that the kids would start fleeing because he's been elevated. And it's not as if young assistants aren't promoted to head coaching gigs all the time across all sports. It might not be a recipe for success, but it's not a guaranteed failure either. Thou the last time Mizzou plucked a baby-faced assistant, Quin Snyder, it didn't work out so well... Personally, I have a good feeling about the Taylors.
Anyways, thanks to the Kreklows for the great run they had and all they did to make this a respectable program. Would love to have at least seen them get to a Final Four, but Mizzou fans can't complain about the job they did.

(For the record, he could be a GREAT coach. But 26-year-olds don’t get head coaching jobs in the SEC) Jordyn Wieber just accepted the head women's gymnastics coaching job at Arkansas - a top 20 program with an average home attendance over 3,000 per meet - at age 24. (I realize it's not volleyball -- but it's a 12-headcount women's scholarship sport in the SEC. Also, I agree, this isn't commonplace and she's most definitely the exception rather than the norm, but it's not totally unheard of anymore for a power conference to take a chance on a young coach. Georgia hired Courtney Kupets after a couple tries at replacing Suzanne Yoculan; it was Courtney's first NCAA coaching job and I believe she was 27 or 28 when the announcement that she'd take over was made.)

If this is a true handoff situation, it somewhat suggests that Mizzou isn't too invested in the program. Invested in the... what?!? Yesterday, the same day this was announced, the AD was in Indianapolis appealing the post-season ban for football. They probably dropped this on his desk while he was neck deep in lawyers trying to figure out how to get Kelly Bryant a shot at the football playoffs. And this isn't unique to Mizzou... Volleyball does not happen in a bubble. When football and/or men's basketball are in trouble the AD does not have the luxury of caring about anything else. Those sports pay for everything else. Right now I cannot imagine Mizzou cares if they have a volleyball program, let alone who is running it, and except for Hawaii, there isn't a college in the country that would be any different in this situation. So no, Mizzou is not too invested in volleyball right now.

“I told (the team) yesterday, that if I ever got to a point where I couldn't give 100 percent and put as much in as they're putting in and what they deserve, and what they need, then it was time to re-evaluate, and, and honestly, that's kind of what happened," he said." - Wayne Kreklow
"Wayne, 62, a college basketball standout at Drake in the 1970s, won an NBA championship with the Boston Celtics as a reserve in 1980-81. Over the last 18 months, he’s been away from the court for long stretches, having undergone hip replacement, double hernia surgery and knee replacement just four weeks ago. He insisted he’s in good shape otherwise, but the surgeries factored into his retirement plans."
