With Rome finished, I thought I'd take about five minutes to see how a local college player, Tina Graudina, is faring in her quest to Qualify go represent Latvia in Tokyo. Well that five minutes turned into two hours because i didn't realize how tight the the race is for ranking positions 13 through 18.
Olympic Qualifcation FIVB RankingWomen, Top 8 finishes after Rome, PER PLAYER, Team = x2
1. Canada1, World Champion, already qualified.
2-4: USA1, Brazil1, Brazil2
5. Aus1 2670 (Clancy), (640, 400, 360, 320, 300, 300, 200, 150) *Apparently one of the 300 results does not count toward Olympic Qualification, since the FIVB shows their total as 2370 (per player)
6. Sui1 2480 (Betschart), (560, 420, 360, 300, 240, 200, 200, 200)
7. Canada2 2440 (Wilkerson), (400, 320, 320, 320, 300, 300, 240, 240)
8. USA 2 (see below for which one??)
9. Sui2 2300 (Heidrich) (420, 400, 400, 240, 240, 200, 200, 200)
------------------------
10. CZE1 2280 (Hermannova) (360, 360, 360, 300, 300, 200, 200, 200)
11. Ger1 2210 (Ludwig)
12. Rus1 2160 (Makroguzova)
13. ITA1 2150 (Menegatti)
14. Ger2 2120 (Borger)
15. Chi1 2070 (Wang)
16. Ned1 2060 (Meppelink)
17. ESP 2040 (Liliana) (360, 320, 300, 240, 240, 240, 240, 200)
18. Ned2 2020 (Stubbe)
--------------
19. tie SVK1 2000 (Strbova)
19. tie. LAT 2000 (Graudina)
GER3 (Ittlinger) is at 1780 .. (320, 240, 240, 240, 200, 200, 180, 160), but might qualify via Haiyang.
This list assumes that (2) of the above listed women's teams will be in the Finals of the Olympic Qualification tournmant in China in two weeks and Qualify outside of the rankings list. So removing Canada1, and two more teams above, the Qualificaiton list should go through Team #18. Then there is a tie at #19 so that should be quite a battle for the last couple of qualification slots.
*edited to add ESP which somehow I left out.
So I suppose I've answered my question about where Latvia stands at this point in the process.
There are a few teams that could catch fire and threaten to break into the list of 18 and displace one of the teams, and they are China2 and GER3 and Aut1 (Schützenhöfer)
On the USA side, there is a furious race for the #2 spot among KWJ/BS, Slaes, and Stocsen. Again using Top 8 finishes to date, they would all finish well within the top 18, but which of the three will take the USA #2 spot?
POINTS PER PLAYER, TOP 8
KWJ/BS: 2490 (240, 270, 280, 300 Norceca, 320, 320, 360, 400)
Slaes: 2440 (240, 240, 240, 300, 300, 360, 360, 400)
Stocsen: 2300 (240, 240, 240, 240, 300, 320, 360, 360)
2S: 2040 (160, 200, 200, 200, 200, 280, 320, 480)
Pending the release of the 2020 FIVB Calendar, assuming they have the same number of stops in 2020, there are (3) 3* events and (6) 4* events remaining. 3* gives 270 points for 2nd, and 300 points for 1st. 4* gives 400 points for first, 360 for 2nd, 320 for 3rd, and 280 for 4th. I don't think the 240 points for 5th will ultimately help Stocsen given the ground they have to close, current results and 12 total events counting. Stocsen need to pull down a few 300 or better finishes.
3* remaining:
Qinzhou
Sydney
Kuala Lampur
4* Remaining
Chetumal
The Hague
Xiamen
Itapema
Jinjiang
Ostrava
It is entirely possible that Stocsen could surpass both Slaes and KWJ/BS. Let's see how much good the coaching change for KWJ/BS does for the remaining tournaments. I do feel that KWJ's experience will ultimately put her team over the top, but time will tell.
*edited to add 2S back in the mix, and to show 300 pts. KWJ/BS got at Norceca.
