I'm always a little amazed that D1 VB teams (and to a certain extent basketball teams) don't put more thought into how their floor/court is going to look on TV or on web streams. It's hard enough sometimes to follow a VB match with limited camera angles and sometimes directors who don't seem to know how to follow the rapid pace of action. But sometimes, even the best broadcast is hampered because the floor is loaded with what I call 'slop'. Too many lines, too many logos, and advertising reader boards with constantly changing light intensity that reflects, especially on hardwood floors. The opposite of the 'slop' floors is a clean floor. One of the best, IMO, is UK: Clear lines; nothing confusing and NO logos at all on the actual in-bounds playing surface. You don't have to plaster logos and ads on the actual playing area. King of slop may be Cal: Or Oregon: Also loaded with slop is the CSU floor with the famous chopped snail shells: Can we just watch the game and not have the sensory overload of logos and ads and artwork and sponsors and slop?

What you don't like is exactly what recruits and young alums DO like.

All of these floors are created for basketball, but I think Santa Clara's Nike-created floor is pretty cool. Double Yuck.

So curmudgeonly! It's a big deal for schools to have their own unique design on the floor, and I think it does appeal to the students. They have to use tape to mark off the volleyball court, though, but you don't hear the players complaining about it.

I have always thought Oregon's floor was the most heinous thing this side of Boise State's blue football field. What a nightmare.

Oregon's trees are all pretty much outside of the volleyball court, so it kind of highlights the playing space of the court. But everyone has different taste.

Look at this and tell me how it makes you feel. This is the definition of 'clean', right? Just the playing surfaces and lines. It looks like it's missing the giant chess pieces, though, and I find it an assault on the senses.

I'm waiting for the day when the entire floor is one gigantic LED flat panel screen so you can "paint" any sport-specific lines that you want and, during time-outs and other breaks, allow the school to show a series of bright advertisements.

If the floor is big ginormous touch panel, then the days of bad line calls should be history.
