GSAC is looking very strong this year. 3 teams in the top 8 and one receiving votes. I’m glad to see more high level volleyball coming to the west coast other than the Division 1 powerhouses. It makes the NAIA as a whole more competitive as well which is always a positive thing

Jamestown sweeps Briarcliff Jamestown now has a West Coast road trip where they will play some quality teams. I think they knock off Vanguard in a battle of first-year programs. Going to be a homecoming for a lot of those guys and I wouldn’t be surprised to see Vanguard’s gym full of Jamestown fans.

Getting down to the end of the season we get to have the fun discussion of who is going to make the most noise as we close out.
Obvious favorite: Grand view/Campbellsville
Top tier: Menlo, Park, Benedictine Mesa, mobap, Lourdes
Dark horses: Cardinal Stritch, Mount Mercy
When it comes to these two Dark Horse picks I think that Mount mercy might slip into nationals and create some upsets. Stellar defensive team, seems like they never lose presence in a game they’re always in the fight. I stand by most of my yearly predictions still with the Cardinal Stritch is a contending team. They have plenty of size/offensive power. Clean up serve receive and FBC they could really hurt a lot of teams going into post season. Both of their middles are leading the nation in a couple categories. Excited to get into crunch time, any other thoughts?

Obvious favorite: Grand view/Campbellsville Top tier: Menlo, Park, Benedictine Mesa, mobap, Lourdes Dark horses: Cardinal Stritch, Mount Mercy I would add #8 Vanguard into the list of dark horses that could potentially make some noise in the last few weeks of the season. they have had neck and neck battles with every D1 team they have played so far, two of them in the NCAA top ten. they went point for point in an extremely close five-set match with Menlo when they played up north, and I can see a possible upset victory when Menlo faces vanguard in their home gym where they took to Ben-U to five. With the GSAC Conference Championships being held at Hope International (only 20 minutes away from vanguard) they could have a possible home-court advantage. other than Menlo and UCSB i don't see them losing another game for the rest of the season. they have one of the best attackers in the nation with Kyle Anema, and consistent production from their middles as well. they are a very solid defensive team as well and have depth in both pin positions. in my opinion, they are a good candidate for an at large spot in the national tournament if they can knock off either Ben-U or Menlo in the conference Championships.

Looking into my magic ball, this is how I see the pools shaping up for the national tournament, barring anything crazy happening (which will likely happen):
Pool A: #1 Grand View (AQ) #4 Menlo (AQ) #5 Mo Bap (At-Large #1) #8 Cardinal Stritch (AQ)
Pool B: #2 Campbellsville (AQ) #3 Park (AQ) #6 Benedictine (At-Large #2) #7 Lourdes (AQ)
Aquinas, Vanguard, and Saint Xavier have the best potential to knock off one of the AQ or At-Large spots in my mind, unless something weird goes on in the Mid-South with Warner or Life making a run at the end.
I agree Vanguard looks good, but I think they are one year away from making some noise. Big test tonight against Jamestown. Also interested to see how Mount Mercy does in some non-conference matches coming up. They have won 11 straight, and will be tested against Lourdes, St Xavier, and Vanguard in the next week. They could shake up the ratings if they get a couple solid results.

Jamestown played a great match last night and got a HUGE match from OCC transfer Clark Steele (25K .579). Was able to make it out to this once, and although Vanguard did not play their best, Jamestown limited their errors and just played solid ball. No doubt top 10 team right now.
Grand View and Park tonight. Park just took care of Lourdes in five last night and put up a huge block. Really interested to see how Chapman fares against the size at the night....who am I kidding, that guy is a freak and it doesn't matter. Grand View in four.

At this stage the NAIA has not cancelled the Spring season yet, but here is an update on each conference so far:
Chicagoland: No postponement GSAC: Play suspended until March 25 Heart of America: No postponement Mid-South: Play suspended through March WHAC: No postponement AMC/KCAC/GPAC: No postponement
I have a strong feeling that the NAIA will cancel everything tomorrow, but part of me thinks that they will try and set themselves apart from the NCAA and not cancel anything. It is a weird association. They recently cancelled their Basketball Championships, which were in progress.

It is a weird association. They recently cancelled their Basketball Championships, which were in progress. CalPac has suspended all athletic events indefinitely: www.calpacathletics.com/article/3631This makes for an interesting situation for a couple of the teams competing in the GSAC this year. UC Merced and BenU-Mesa, who actually belong to the CalPac, have cancelled all their remaining matches, including those scheduled after 3/25. Other CalPac schools (St. Katherine, Westcliff, Park-Gilbert, Simpson) also appear to have cancelled all remaining matches.

It looks like all conferences throughout the country within the NAIA have no mandated postponement of the season. The NAIA will likely make a decision next week based on the recommendation from the Council of Presidents. The one thing about the NAIA is that it is an association that is driven by its membership, instead of an association that drives the membership (NCAA). So in these cases it takes them a bit longer to respond as they have to have more people get together to make the call.
Anticipating a full cancellation of Spring sports come next week though.
