While Nebraska is always a massive threat and I’m really, really not trying to jinx it, but Texas can pretty much offer Spears a starting spot her freshman year. Whether he says it or not, you can look at the depth chart and see that. Nebraska cannot. In fact, theres a chance she wouldn’t see time on the left pin until 2027.

I don’t see how a top 2025 middle wants to go to that logjam.

I don’t see how a top 2025 middle wants to go to that logjam. My experience is that people make an emotional decision then rationalize it afterwards. I don’t know how big of a priority the MB position is for Nebraska. But they’ve done an amazing job of selling recruits emotionally on the Nebraska experience regardless of the depth chart. I do know they need to get their setting figured out, but I also have a lot of confidence they’ll do so. I’d also say they need to beat Wisconsin someday, but it hasn’t put a damper in their recruiting so far, so what do I know?

However, I am kind of curious about Campbell Flynn. The fact she was at the Elite Camp means she has some sort of interest in Texas.

Departing seniors after the 2024 season:
OH - Madi Skinner OH - Jenna Wenaas DS - Keonilei Akana
Looking at our projected roster for 2025 (* denoting those who I believe might not be scholarship players) based on my assumptions as to who redshirts at one point:
Seniors OPP - Devin Kahahawai (SR) L - Emma Halter (SR)
Juniors MB - Marianna Singletary (R-JR) S - *Marina Crownover (R-JR) OH - *Kenna Miller (R-JR) OH - Jordyn Byrd (JR) S - Ella Swindle (JR)
Sophomores OPP - *Auburn Tomkinson (R-SO) MB - Nya Burton (R-SO) OH - Sydney Helmers (R-SO) L - *Reese Emerick (SO) S - *Rella Binney (SO)
So difficult to predict how many 2025 recruits we'll end up signing as so much can happen with attrition as well as incoming transfers between now and November 2024 signing period. My "safe" number is 3 signees; 4 at the most if the coaching staff is really fond of them. As much as I'd like to sign one of the top setters in the class, they'd be joining the program knowing Swindle would still have 2 seasons of eligibility remaining. Definitely see us signing at least one OH and one MB.

So with the 2025 announcements looming near I’m having trouble containing my excitement so I did a little digging. The following athletes are being followed by JE/Texas VB AND are following back.
Campbell Flynn S (Both) Callie Kruger L (Texas VB) Charlotte Glass S (JE) Cari Spears OH (JE) Kalyssa Blackshear MB (Texas VB) Kaci Demaria OH (Both) Addy Gaido OPP (Both) Hazel Alevok MB (Both) Abby Vander Wal OH (Both) Manaia Ogbechie MB (Texas VB) Ryan Hunter OPP (Texas VB)
Obviously it means nothing until an official announcement but maybe it’s a nice starting point for us on who to keep an eye out for.

And, that's 1-2 years in advance before any unexpected infusion of portal transfers cloudy the waters. Obviously, that happens at several programs.

In most sports, it means almost nothing until they sign their LOI in November/December 2024 and enroll in classes (instead of asking a school to release them from their signed LOI). I'm glad volleyball doesn't have nearly as many decommitments as football and hoops; but, it's only a matter of time before those numbers increase.

I definitely feel like our pin hitter depth chart for 2025 will be more inviting than Nebraska's. But, that's as of right now. So much can change between now and then; unfortunately, these 2025 recruits don't have crystal balls to know how the rosters and depth charts will look 2 years from now. After 2024, we lose (likely) multiple year starters in Skinner and Wenaas. Kahahawai will have one year of eligibility remaining. So, that leaves Byrd, Helmers, and Tomkinson for a true freshman pin to battle with for 2 pin hitter starting spots. Nebraska would still likely have returning pin hitter starters in Harper Murray (JR), Skylar Pierce (RS-FR or SO), and Caroline Jurevicius (RS-SO or JR) to try and unseat. Granted, Spears did beat out Pierce last summer for a roster spot with USA basketball; so, I'm sure she has the confidence in herself that she could go to just about any program and earn that starting sport as a true freshman. It's gonna be interesting to follow Jurevicius' career at Nebraska. I doubt she ever expected someone like Beason to transfer to Nebraska and have a direct impact on her first and second year playing time. Maybe she'll redshirt a season. Maybe her affinity for Nebraska is so great that the depth chart has no impact.

She’ll mostly likely be training a bit at both pins too… but no reason not to redshirt her. If Beason got hurt, the backup situation is putting Krause on the right and Ally on the left. Not putting Caroline on the right.
