Was really referencing a DS prospect like Heinrich that will be a non-scholarship player for several years or even their entire career. I see. Since Heinrich's not getting much playing time (unlike Claire Hahn and Autumn Rounsaville who played in just about every match of their 4-year careers despite not being on scholarship), I see the non-scholarship DS kind of being a very rare occurrence moving forward if Elliott plans on 2 scholarship Liberos/DS on future rosters. Why? Just about every other team in the country usually carries at least 2-3 non-scholarship DS's. No roster limit to keep Elliott from doing so. If a player like Parra wasn't on this roster (an OH that is good enough in the backcourt to be used as a DS), Heinrich would be receiving more playing time.

Doesn't really matter what other teams are doing. We used to have at least 2 non-scholarship DS on the roster; but, times have changed. If Coach Elliott wanted to carry more than one non-scholarship DS on the roster, this season would have been the one to do it with O'Brien's departure. And, prior to O'Brien joining the team (unexpectedly), didn't seem like any other non-scholarship DS was going to be on the roster last season other than Heinrich. So, this is two seasons in a row with 2 scholarship Liberos/DS, and only 1 non-scholarship DS. Does 2 seasons in a row equal a trend? Maybe. If next season it's Iosia and Halter on scholarship, and only Heinrich as non-scholarship, that will make 3 seasons in a row with this same combination. Parra is definitely an exception as she came to Texas as a scholarship OH. Her being able to contribute in the back row as a DS is a bonus for Texas, especially due to her serving skills. Not sure this is how our coaching staff expected things to turn out. But, I don't think that will be the norm in the future (although I'd love for it to be the case).

A DS recruit is going to be a non-scholarship player, so we likely won't see any sort of announcement until they are accepted for admission. Prior to Iosia signing in November 2019, Jerritt had typically only had one Libero/DS on scholarship. But, that changed as we've had Petersen and Iosia the last 2 seasons. Next year it appears Halter and Iosia will both be on scholarship. So, after Iosia departs, that's when I'd expect a second scholarship DS/Libero. I guess there's always the chance a DS joins who isn't on scholarship their first season, but perhaps will be in subsequent seasons. Go look at the scholarship count on page one of this thread. I had to guess that Halter had to be a walk-on for the 12 scholarship limit to work. And next year, we'll be over. So I expect a transfer out for next year to make it even 12.
EDIT: And IF that player I think transfers out next year.....it means that there can be a scholarship open in 2023. Maybe a 1-year to Halter or maybe a DS recruit?

I know we're all speculating. I don't think Kenna Miller will be on scholarship come 2022; but, I do believe Halter will be. I'm basing that on how early/late they made their verbal commitments.

well UT has some time to sit on this and hope she doesn't change her mind. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Auburn change her mind because Bryd is giving me college opposite vibes. Byrd will be lighting it up on the left, Auburn will be doing the same on the right. Pick your poison

I think there's a reasonable chance that Cabello transfers after this season. 2 seasons of SKT (while I love it) will make playing time scarce for Cabello - and with Swindle coming up, it's gotta be something she's thinking about. Also possible that Jhenna doesn't return (especially if we win a natty) or gets her scholarship pulled as a grad student.

I don’t follow a ton of HS recruiting but my anecdotal review of her high lights leads me to believe Byrd will get a crack at any front row position she wants to start with. I would let her start on the left and see where it goes from there.

Could most definitely see her taking on the typical 3 rotation left side, that is the terminal one, i.e. Webster, Fields, Cerame… but would also love to see her play all around since she’s already doing it…

I hate that this is the case, bc like where can she transfer to and be successful? It’s not like she’s had much playing time to develop, and she’s already used up 2 years of eligibility😭 it sucks

But she'll have 3 years of eligibility left, has played with TX and at 6' 1" is tall enough that many programs would consider IMO.

I would let her start on the left and see where it goes from there. let's hope her last club playing time involves heavy doses of 6-rotation play-at the open level. that would be a great way to get some quality time to see if it would work. then the obvious working on it at the national team level in whatever she chooses to play.

If she could play 6 rotation OH at the college level who wouldn’t want that, I’m not saying she can’t or can but should get a shot.

With these recruits coming in the next couple years, and Logan as of now staying (Parra unclear), where does that leave Madison Williams? I thought surely we’d have seen her sub in by now this season. It’s only going to get tougher for her to crack the lineup moving forward, I feel.

Most likely being redshirted.
