I will say a lot of our transfers in replaced players who had transferred out. Obviously not all of them, but it’s the main reason why there was more than normal last season. After the 2021 season we had SIX players move on to play at other schools (Gabriel, Petersen, Cabello, Williams, Fields and Iosia). So we brought in transfers + freshman to replace them, which of course people saw as building a “super team” that was “unfair”. If players are allowed to transfer out why should teams not be able to replace them? That’s asking a lot of any freshman class to replace that many impact players on their own. Not to mention Butler leaving to play professionally.
Point is, transfers have been a part of the program before and will continue to be. However, our needs are largely determined on the amount of roster turnover in a given year.

I’m talking about the one’s that actually choose to come to Texas the first time around So you don’t want Elliot to use the portal to get another skinner ever again? Or another ebony?? Another SKT? Fleck? Another Caffey, Bergmark, Barnes, Ewert, Akana. All of them had great roles to play and helped/are helping the team immensely. But I want to see what Byrd can do. If we're bringing in someone like Beason (no chance) or Londot, or Martin, THAT I can get excited about. Lauenstein, as good as she's been at her best, is not quite at the same level, IMO. I will say I'm not sure how excited I'd be about a Fleck type player at this point. I love Halter and want to see her on the court. If they're coming to Texas I'd want them to understand it's as a DS. Same with SKT types. I really like Swindle as the setter for the next 3 years. I think competition is healthy, but I see her getting better and better. I feel like she's going to have a spectacular career at Texas. But if Fischer wants to transfer in as a middle blocker, or Martin wants to change schools for her next 3 years as an opposite, bring 'em on. I just don't see Lauenstein in the same way.

Without knowing for certain who is on a scholarship every season (in orange below) versus who was awarded a scholarship only certain seasons, there's a chance we still have an open scholarship for 2024 based on my guesses (more if there is offseason attrition); and, it might not even matter these days with NIL options. The 'ship numbers get a lot tighter once the 2025 signees join the program.
Seniors (fifth year eligible): OH - Jenna Wenaas OH - Madi Skinner DS - Keonilei Akana
Juniors: L/DS - Emma Halter OPP - Devin Kahahawai
Sophomores: S - Ella Swindle MB - Marianna Singletary, RS OH - Kenna Miller, RS S - Marina Crownover, RS
Freshmen: OH - Sydney Helmers, RS MB - Nya Bunton, RS OPP/MB - Jordyn Byrd, RS OPP - Auburn Tomkinson, RS
2024 verbal commitments: MB - Ayden Ames L/DS - Reese Emerick S - Rella Binney DS - Brennan Ramirez
2025 verbal commitments: L/DS - Callie Krueger OH - Abby Vander Wal OPP - Addison Gaido OH - Macaria Spears

My opinion is that NIL has made scholarship numbers/limits redundant.
if you get the same amount of money each semester from NIL as you can from scholarships does it matter? Years ago NCAA said “walkons” could partake in the same benefits as scholarship players.
This had me thinking about NIL and JE. Is he that involved directly in NIL? YES & NO arguments from what he has said.
NO: I don’t know what players get from the Texas One fund
YES: If we were to offer and the kids [can’t say] would you guys be interested?
NO: Logan told me she was turning down a commercial shoot in LA because she would have missed a practice and when she told me the amount I told her to GO! But maybe this is a YES
YES: We have to find some NIL money for Molly (a few weeks after he told us 2 years ago she was coming back for her 5th year)
YES/NO: When I found out Logan was just letting her NIL money sit in her savings account I realized we had to get each of these girls connected to financial planners to get ready when they go pro

I don’t think it’s redundant yet simply because I’m not seeing it in any sport. Having a scholarship seems to have an inherent value in some way, otherwise we’d be seeing more walkons than we do right now. I remember when Ricky Williams was classified as a walk-on his entire time at Texas because he was playing professional baseball. But I don’t see the same dynamic with players at Texas who are getting paid huge sums of money in both football and basketball. They’re being counted against scholarship limits. I know we had 14 scholarship quality players last year - and that’s not even counting DeAndra Pierce, who is proving she’s a scholarship quality player, or Kendra Miller who I believe is a scholarship level player, but both of whom I believe were walkons last year. But Ewerts and Caffey were only enrolled one semester and they both had degrees, so their necessary class load was very limited. Same with Barnes this semester, whom I feel confident is a walkon, even though I don’t have any information to that effect. Bottom line, NIL has had an extremely limited effect on roster sizes in any full scholarship sport in ways that have surprised me so far. That scholarship seems to be important to players regardless of the NIL money offered. Where I see it making a much bigger impact is in partial scholarship sports like baseball and softball. To field a top level competitive roster you better have NIL funding supplementing partial scholarship aid or you’re simply not going to be able to field a championship team. Not saying this will always be the case. To be honest I thought NIL - especially the dollar figures I’m seeing in the main revenue sports - would be creating much larger rosters as a side effect, but that hasn’t really happened. So for now I’d say for whatever reason student athletes want to be on scholarship, and only in rare cases are they willing to forgo it so that coaches can keep a larger roster size of scholarship talent level players.

i'm not sure why texas would go after lauenstein (i know she's talented)...we have a lot of pin hitters unless some players are planning to leave the program -no scholarship for her (nil) - especially if both skinner & wenaas return next year -it will be difficult to keep air byrd off the court next year -opp. position opens up with phillips leaving (devin? byrd?) -i'm not sure she would get playing time -imo if texas goes after her someone is leaving Nobody on the coaching staff following Lauenstein. If you believe in Insta-sleuthing, it looks unlikely

Beginning of early National Signing period is Wednesday, November 8th.
I had totally forgotten that we brought in 2024 MB Alec Rothe out of Ohio for an official visit (last August/September 2022) only to see her eventually commit to Florida. So, we obviously were in the market to add an MB for our 2024 class; now we end up with Ayden Ames. Perhaps Ames wouldn't have come to Texas in the end had Rothe chosen Texas. Things often work out for the best . . .

It’s part of why I never get too worried about talent acquisition with Elliott at Texas. He’s always going to get more than his fair share one way or another.
