Are we just randomly throwing out names? I mean, I don’t think elite graduating players on non-T25 teams would be considered random. Fleck (her team was T25 but the writing was on the wall that they weren’t gonna be good the next season), SKT, Ewert, Bergmark, Barnes. plus the hundreds others that have done it the past couple seasons.

If they haven’t said I’m leaving at the end of the season I think it’s kind of random. And in the portal age it doesn’t have to be a graduating senior, it could be anyone.

Are we just randomly throwing out names? Is my Amazon wish list random? I have delegated the responsibility of going to the Nebraska thread and causing as much transfer chaos as possible. God speed.

Naur! the only transfer I personally feel like who would be worth it is Fischer. Devin/Byrd will be fine at OPP and tbh Singletary/Burton/Ames will probably be fine at MB but I'd like a little more depth there personally.

That’s not how things work. First of all, the portal doesn’t open and shut down on a certain date. It’s actually always active. The new windows (they were only implemented last year - the portal itself is only a few years old) allow for a waiver. If an undergrad enters the portal during the designated times they’re allowed a one time waiver where they do not have to sit out a season if they transfer. They can play right away. Waivers are granted for other reasons. If a player has already earned a degree they can transfer without sitting out a season. If their coach’s job status changes they can transfer without sitting out a season. If the NCAA grants a hardship waiver they can transfer without sitting out for a season. The NCAA used to hand out hardship waivers like candy on Halloween, but they’ve announced they’re not going to do that any more. Because Lauenstein officially withdrew from Nebraska, is no longer on scholarship, she also doesn’t have the same restrictions regarding visiting other schools that a scholarship player would. She can visit wherever she wants. That’s why a player like Morgan O’Brien was able to attend Texas, come out for practices, and eventually play for Texas while in grad school. She had to enter the portal right before she became a part of the team, but she was actually already enrolled at Texas by then. That’s why Jhenna Gabriel was able to become a volunteer coach at UNLV under Dawn Sullivan, and eventually became their starting setter. She eventually entered the portal to become part of the UNLV team, but that was after she had already been on campus for quite a while. Same thing with Lauenstein. She can visit campuses all she likes, but before she can be a part of a team she’ll enroll in the portal to make it official. But by then she’ll have made her decision and it will be simply a matter of following a procedure. None of this is to declare Lauenstein is for sure visiting Texas or when that will occur. I do believe Lauenstein is visiting Texas. IMO she’ll end up committing to come to Texas. Texas just doesn’t lose a lot of these. There are too many advantages compared to other programs. Texas will have an extremely compelling sales pitch to offer Lauenstein. But we’ll see. What I will say is that the December 3 date will have no bearing on her recruitment. She’s not a scholarship player. She’s not going to have to sit out a year regardless. Therefore the portal windows have no application to her. We can be on Whit-watch during the Cincinnati match this weekend. Has anyone seen Lauenstein? Is she in shape? Has she been working out with a team? Last I heard she was at a Waverly volleyball game with her baby.

Im wondering why we haven't had any signing posts from national signing day yesterday. All major programs had a post about it.

I remember for the class of ‘22 we only posted for Singletary, Halter, and Kahahawai. Not for Miller or Crownover. Since our ‘24 class likely consists of walk-ons besides Ames (who was unable to officially sign due to clerical process as a result of her re-commitment last week), we won’t post anything until Ames signs. Who we post on signing days is usually a good metric for determining our scholarship count, since it appears we only post for scholarship signees who actually need to sign an NLI.

Devin/Byrd will be fine at OPP and tbh Singletary/Burton/Ames will probably be fine at MB but I'd like a little more depth there personally. I disagree. With Philipps gone in 2024 and Wenaas ongoing struggle, we need a reliable pin who can terminate. The fact that Kahahawai can’t seem to beat out Wenaas, a player who has hit .000 in a few matches now, does not give me the confidence that we’re “fine”. I do agree Byrd will be solid at either OH or OPP, but I’m not confident in what Kahahawai/Wenaas can bring to the table next year that will make a difference from this season, which means we should probably consider the portal for an OPP or OH over a MB. We need someone who can be Skinners equal counterpart — I don’t see Wenaas or Kahahawai being in that role. If anything, we’re more fine at MB since Singletary will be a RS Soph, Bunton a RS Freshman, and Ames a true (but highly ranked) freshman.

Honestly, the current state of things has shown us age/experience isn’t everything (and not just as far as longhorns are concerned). Let’s see what the youngins are capable of. That’s my new official stance.
