Doesn’t the VB team have to maneuver around recreation and intramural basketball to secure court time at Gregory? Yes, but not really. The volleyball team has their own dedicated practice facility. Those volleyball facilities are separate from Gregory gym. I believe they are built into the north endzone. So they work with Gregory Gym to reserve the court and facilities for all their games way ahead of time. At least, that's my understanding of the arrangement based on what CDC has said over the years. Thry basically rent the gym for their home games. If they ever so chose, a move over to Moody would be very easy and seemless. Well, I don't know about easy and seamless. But I would think it would at least be doable. I know there are contractual limitations to how many events UT has reserved at Moody, and then there's the obvious issue of scheduling around men and women's basketball. I think the biggest thing right now is that it would be half full for most matches. Regarding expanding Gregory, I think about the Gallagher-Iba gym at Oklahoma State. They lifted the roof off to increase the capacity to keep the building, but it's not the same it used to be (they put a new roof back on, in case anyone is wondering).

I know some of you have expressed your thoughts on Landfair. But what do you think about Kentucky's Rutherford entering the portal? We'd have to think that our coaches are at least giving consideration to one or both? I also think that if used correctly, Landfair has a huge upside. And in the right culture she could flourish. As we learn more about the players who come here, many rediscover what made them passionate about the sport. Thoughts? I kinda saw the Rutherford move coming. Just had a feeling. I was trying to strike up dialog, but only got one bite for discussion. I know all of the moves to Texas seem crazy to us fans. What we have to remember is that this staff is trying make the gym as competitive as possible. It's a formula that worked well for us in '22. We had some drop off with level of competition in the practice gym in '23. The result, it took a bit longer to gel and to sort some issues out as a team. I believe they are leaning back into the formula used in '22. Let's trust the staff and the process. They've certainly proven by now, they know what they are doing... And it's the culture that's drawing the players in.

I meant easy and seemless from the perspective of the team. They'd (figuratively) just walk to Moody instead of Gregory. nothing else would change. It's because of this they'd never expand Gregory. Why would they go through years of trouble and expense to modify gregory when they can just go across campus to the best arena in all of college sports?

You keep spelling seamless wrong, dang it. I'm sincerely sorry for being so pedantic. It weirds me out for some reason. I spell things wrong all the time, so it's not due to some kind of perfection on my part. mln59 purposefully bugs me with irregardless, so feel free to throw seemless at me as often as you want. And yeah, I'm with you. I don't see the expansion of Gregory on the table.

But regarding dates, that's not an issue if you're willing to get creative. I came up through Division III as a manager/student-assistant/intern. In order to save money, one of the things they would always do is travel all men's and women's teams together and play double headers. There's no reason the men and women's basketball team couldn't play on the same day. I think there's room for some really cool stuff if you start exploring that. What if you scheduled the OU basketball men's and women's teams as back-to-back double headers and make it an OU hate day in February? Same for A&M. What if you did a Texas-Stanford Challenge and scheduled men's and women's basketball in a triple header with volleyball? All 3 sports play the same day on the same court. Fire Up Bevo Boulevard and make some events out of it. There's a bunch of ACC and Big 10 schools with programs that would be looking to save money. Combining dates for some things might be really convenient for the right opponent school. You just got to get creative and dates in Moody don't need to be an issue. Volleyball can always just play a handful of showcase games there. They don't have to be full-time residents. I've grown very accustomed and over-reliant on the browser spell-check and grammarly. Neither of which work on Volleytalk.

Why would they go through years of trouble and expense to modify gregory when they can just go across campus to the best arena in all of college sports? 1. The team has fancy locker rooms inside the stadium, but the players and the coaches ironically like to practice in Gregory because of the sight lines, etc....
Makes me wonder if they have student assistants in golf carts to drive them up and down the hill between the stadium and Gregory.
2. JE wants more people but he doesn't want to leave Gregory. It's a competitive advantage having people "on top of you" (we can lip read what the coaches are saying in the huddle) and the screaming/noise made does distract the other team during play. (they've said so)
3. Athletics (volleyball) rents Gregory from Rec Sports. In order to expand Gregory, you'd have to get the money and the agreement from the university that's not athletics to do this. Unlikely.
4. Moody is NICE. But I experienced watching the team play in Erwin during COVID and playing in a big cave is not the same as playing in a tight den that is Gregory. The screaming dissipates as we are too far away.
Did you know that Gregory does have wooden floors, but that the wooden floors are actually on springs? JE informed of this slight fact when asked if next year Terraflex would be installed. It won't be because: a) they're renting it from Rec Sports and can't leave it there full time. b) there's no place to store the Terraflex in between times Gregory is used for other things. (I've seen pictures from the 2000's of Gregory hosting yoga classes)

I found the following video of the locker room and practice facilities rather interesting and relates to the original question. texassports.com/sports/2017/7/26/volleyball-practice-center.aspx

Well, we’ll have to do terraflex for regionals if we host next year. That will be interesting.
