Rutgers Athletics Announces Change To Volleyball Leadership Story LinksPISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers University Director of Athletics announced that the contract of head women's volleyball coach CJ Werneke will not be renewed. Werneke spent 12 seasons as the head coach guiding the program through the transition from the Big East to the American and the Big Ten. "We would like to thank CJ for his time and service at Rutgers and his dedication to our student-athletes, including navigating the program through conference realignment to join the nation's best volleyball conference," said Director of Athletics Pat Hobbs. "After evaluating the program, I felt a change in leadership was appropriate at this time." In addition to competing at the highest level on the court, Werneke's teams established elite academic standards off the court having received four consecutive NCAA Academic Recognitions for ranking in the top 10 percent nationally in multi-year APR scores and six straight seasons with an APR score of 1000. Under Werneke, Rutgers also earned back-to-back AVCA Team Academic Awards and last year boasted five Scarlet Knights earning Big Ten Distinguished Scholar Awards for grade-point averages of 3.7 or higher. Prior to arriving at Rutgers, Werneke won four consecutive MAAC regular season titles at Fairfield, joining the Stags after spending 1999-01 as an assistant coach at Rutgers under Anne Leonard-House. A national search will begin immediately. I know nothing about the program, how he coached, how he ran the program. But to keep trying, keep beating his head against the Big Ten wall year after year, to continue to send his troops into a completely no-win situation, that deserves special recognition. Rutgers is a joke of an athletic department. Werneke is hardly Hugh Mccutcheon but what is their expectation? Any legitimate coach that has a future as a top college vb coach would be insane to take that job. The Big Ten would love a do over in bringing in Rutgers. Julie Hermann destroyed the athletic department when she ran it and they are still recovering. They just hired back their former winning football coach so that is a positive.

Wonder what the selling point for Rutgers will be? Middle school gym? Fan support? Admin support? Recruiting territory? Volleyball history? Ability to compete in the B1G?
Or, "Hey, it's a volleyball coaching job! You can network with the other B1G coaches and maybe get on their staffs."

They just hired Schiano at 32 million. Trying to re-create history. Good luck with that.

I think the AD who got run out of there for not stopping his men's hoops coach from chucking basketballs at players' faces was otherwise doing good things with that department. Probably made them palatable to the B1G with the facility upgrades that went on in that era. Hermann was certainly a disaster. But, even in spite of progress made prior to her arrival, it's not like this was Rome and she was Nero.

Rutgers and the Big Ten are rethinking the decision. Missouri is looking pretty good now huh. They begged to come over and BIG turned them down.

Well, Schiano played them and its unlikely they can really afford what they promised him.

It was never about competitiveness. I am guessing there has been ample financial benefit to both parties Not really. The B1G wanted to capture the New York City market with the addition of Rutgers. It really hasn't happened. Rutgers has been a financial liability as well as an athletic liability. Exactly. They wanted the New York market but if that’s case there are other teams I would have looked at first like Syracuse. This is all happening because Notre dame refuses to join conference in football
