Timeline of UNC:
2016: 29-4 Final Record: UNC defeated WISC, Penn State, and FSU (twice). This with the #3 ranked recruiting class. Won the ACC Title, ACC POY Taylor Leath, ACC FOY Julia Scoles, Lost to UCLA in Sweet 16 in 4th set 28 to 26.
2017: 14-14 Final Record: UNC without Evans and Scoles due to injuries; Borup, Fields, Hough, Hull, Laufenburg, Fradenburg all missed time to due injuries. UNC did not qualify for NCAA and placed 8th in ACC.
2018: 8-19 Final Record: UNC loses Eve Rackham, Gavin Watt, and Tyler Adams to Tenn; Scoles, Borup, Calrton, Fields, Leath all transfer. Start with #8 recruiting class. Lose Harrison (#22 Recruit) to injury. Bring in Atherton, Tontai, and Wine. Susan Clements and Mike Schall replace assistant coaches. NO ACC picks, no NCAA or NIVC qualifications, and finished tied for last in the conference.
2019: 15-13 Final Record (7 more wins than prior season). Tied for 3rd in the ACC with a 12-6 record. Defeated BC in a sweep at home and beat #23 FSU at time at home for first ranked win since 2016. First winning season since 2016. Solid trajectory up last 2/3 of season, stumbled last 2 matches due to injury. Lost Ava Bell prior to season to transfer….placed Lauren Harrison on 1st Team All ACC team but choosing to transfer for 2020 season, placed Howard and Austin on ACC Freshmen Team. Observations:
Need more terminal pin hitters; we only return one left side pin hitter. Could Destiny go back to the LS?
RS and M seem to be most solid offensively. Those should be strong areas for us.
Libero battle will be interesting, especially between Wurl and Reed.
Setting: Will Mitorvich, the future of UNC, run a 5-1 alone, or do we see a 5-2 or 6-2 based on who is available on the pins?
Of course we will also keep track of possibly more transfers here, transfers in and out….
