And, yes, a tired team and an empty bench, but god forbid a college coaching staff makes a few tiny in game changes, and pick up a win. Two of the sets we lost were only separated by two points. You may be cool shrugging off a loss cause we are tired and have an empty bench, but I am not when it was a winnable game even under the circumstances.

I think the failure to make any in game adjustments by the staff contributes a lot to us losing this game. I won’t deny our current situation with personnel is hurting us - although you can argue that this coaching staff has put us in the situation with a culture full of transfers out and lackluster transfers in - but I have never seen a team give up so many tip points ever without making an adjustment. In addition, every single free ball we send over goes to the center of their court and puts no pressure on the other team, making no in-game adjustments defensively to a player having success on us at any given second, failing to adjust the game plan offensively when players were off, and somehow thinking the best possible chance to get out of a bad rotation is to sub a front-row hitter for a 5-5 DS with a lefty in front left without at least trying to adjust the serve receive to a two-passer system is just inexcusable. This staff can’t coach in game and that has been well established over the last couple of years. Joe’s adjustments have always been personnel and not actual offensive or defensive system tactics. We got up big and Clemson made adjustments and we started to fall apart. We didn’t make any adjustments. I’m with you on this one re in game tactical adjustments. Blinders on. The offensive and defensive system stayed the same and UNC could not cover tips. Adjust to a better block coverage on their top hitter in set. Placement of free balls. Etc...

What "offensive system" could they have changed to mid-match? A 5-1? A setter leading middles lineup? What do you think Clemson did defensively to make an offensive system change a good idea? I watched the match finally today. Perhaps I missed something? With two starters lost late in the practice week and one lost in Friday's match, I doubt UNC prioritized prepping multiple systems of offensive and defensive play. I know my team wouldn't! I agree that tip coverage was a defensive problem. This looked like a matter of execution rather than "system" or "tactics" but maybe we're using those words differently.

Ryan Shanon and Olivia Diaz and Nikki started their first time for UNC - with the 6-2 there was literally only one player left on the bench that could be utilized. The team played 10 sets in less than 24 hours.
Did anyone see Syracuse beat Clemson in 5 and Clemson (#24) had 37 kills?

My apologies, I meant adjustments within the offensive and defensive system, not the systems themselves. It's interesting that Joe didn't bounce back and forth between a 6-2 and a 5-1 like he did last Fall in the middle of matches. Had they gone to a 5-1 it would have put Phegley back in the middle and kept either Tontai or Nikki back on the bench. Maybe that means they are prioritizing a 6-2 moving forward.

There is zero question the personnel issues that is going on and the amount of sets they've played. The problem is not making in-game adjustments. Small in game adjustments can swing a few points and in a third set that we lost 25-23 (while we were leading the match 2-0), maybe the team could have finished the weekend only playing eight sets in two days and left with two wins while shorthanded. Imagine what that can do for confidence in a young team. Literally small adjustments in tip coverage and placement of free balls could have made all the difference. Those are simple things we coach to our high school kids and adjust as necessary. It's not like anyone is asking to make wholesale system adjustments (even though I mistakenly implied that earlier) on the fly to get wins.

So back after a long break....yes Syracuse was without Shamanova and their MB, but we were without Buckner and Wurl, 2 key starters. Plus, a win is a win. Loved the resiliency and the fast offense to the pins and all the middle combo plays. Our offense can be deceptive when we pass well. Clemson was just more fresh than we were. You could see our passing went downhill due to a combination of fatigue but also more aggressive tiger serving. We were way more OOS and Kaya being a middle playing on the left couldnt put a ball away OOS. Kaya had me wondering Friday why we werent playing her on the LS as she was putting balls down with authority. But Sunday reminded me she isnt good enough OOS yet. Olivia also got picked on a lot and her inexperience showed. Overall, we are seeing the coaches lack of preparation in our lack of depth. If any other pin goes down, we have no one to play there.
Also, Zinger has taken some time to get going, but she was big in both matches this weekend. Already an offensive upgrade to Cox in my opinion. And Niki did well if we are without Skyy a few matches. I do think we are about to go to a 5-1....due to some injuries so that should help with depth but possibly be a blocking liability...
This weekend is big. We must beat BC and need to take down GA Tech. Currently we are 3rd in the ACC at 7-3. If BC cant play, we will get GA Tech twice which will be very scary.

Getting GT twice would be rough, especially in Atlanta. There is just something about that gym.

UNC passed better and had a higher FBSO rate against the Tigers than they did against Cuse. Syracuse lost because their block wasn't getting good touches and they couldn't slow down UNC in transition. UNC passed better than Clemson but they didn't get quality swings in transition and Clemson had the better floor defense.

I just felt that looking at the quality of passes in the 3rd and 4th set, we were not as sharp, but agree our transition offense was abysmal.
and yes, we have struggled at GA Tech for years.

No games this weekend. Postponed “out of an abundance of caution” related to COVID. Appears a previous opponent has a positive test and we are being careful with contact tracing.

Clemson had a positive and basically has knocked out UNC and Cuse this weekend. So no positive tests at UNC or Cuse - just contact tracing CYA.
Everyone having fun yet!

May be a good thing we postponed....COVID isnt the only thing to deal with as we have several athletes out right now. If we dont have some of them back by this weekend, ND will slaughter us and maybe even lose to Wake....
Coaches are about to learn the importance of quality depth...

Coaches are about to learn the importance of quality depth... I'm sure that's a new concept for a staff with, uh, like 90 years of combined coaching experience.
