What are the passing numbers so far in the big ten? Who’s leading the way? I always find it interesting to see the #s since it is so hard to make any assumptions just from watching. Purdue followed by penn state and then Michigan State are the top 3 right now from what I pulled but even Purdue isn’t outstanding. Elite Passing teams like UK and Oregon are a lot higher than anyone in the B1G Purdue’s numbers aren’t going to be outstanding because of their passing system. And their DS has struggled (Schmerhorn? That’s probably not how it’s spelled lol)

Though I still don’t think they would be as good as UK and Oregon are passing rn

I think Minnesota is structured right now along the lines of teams that have historically given the badgers fits - a solid team built around a dominant pin hitter. The badgers got better at dealing with teams like that by the end of last year, but Plummer still killed them in the NC when they weren't playing their best. It will be interesting to see what this version of the gophers brings to the table. It's more in line with the Daly Santana and Wilhite years than the previous one. Nebraska is more uncertain to me. A lot of new elements that haven't been fully tested or integrated, along with some veteran elements. The defensive tenacity they showed last night could be problematic for any team, but they also showed weakness is serve receive. I'm not sure they can win playing OOS so much. We'll see tomorrow and next weekend. I'm also still trying to get a bead on OSU, who I've seen a lot this year. They look good, but give up a lot of sets, like just now against illinois. Your analysis is Wisconsin has had issues stopping the following players: Plummer, Wilhite, Santana and Samedy? Do you have a list of teams that haven't had trouble with those players? I'm saying that when teams have beaten the badgers in recent years, it's because some hitter has gone crazy hitting OOS and from the back row. The badgers just haven't been great defending OOS system attacks in previous years. It was part of the problem last year in preseason. Even in the B1G season, Nebraska hit better OOS than in system against the badgers, according to Sheff. That should never happen against a good defensive team. UW has gotten better at it last year. Quade couldn't beat them. Parker couldn't beat them in Madison. May couldn't beat them. Pressley couldn't beat them in the semi finals. But they were not good enough to beat Plummer, who largely hit OOS against the badgers in the NC. They didn't defend her OOS attacks well for whatever reason. Not saying the badgers should have won, but they did not do well. I was there. Unlike last year, Hugh will try to ride Samedy's arm against the badgers, hoping aspects of the rest of their play hold their own. Samedy is now playing like a POY candidate - just like Santana and Wilhite before. I think that's a deliberate switch in strategy. He knows his enemy and he knows that's the possible weakness, and he knows his freshman setter can deliver the ball to her. She can't set the slide and split the block like SSS could but it may not matter, because Samedy is a different player. Smarter and even more, dare I say it, physical.

The Badgers have yet to play a team that is nearly as good as them, so they will have to show they can win big points in big matches down the line. That said, when they do play the Gophers, Minnesota can bring a lot to bear against them, especially with Samedy being really, really good thus far, but Minnesota will have a lot to deal with in slowing down the Badgers as well. Duello was a good player for the Badgers once she was able to finally get more healthy, but Robinson has a higher ceiling, and the Badgers have never had anyone the likes of Demps to come off the bench should a left side struggle.

Yeah I fail to understand the placement of Ohio State in that as well
So you two would put them in the same tier as Nebraska?

honestly yes lol. Nebraska hasn’t been impressive this season. I’d say Nebraska is going to end up being the better team because of how good their coaching is but right now they are in the same tier OSU has better players in some positions though which usually isn’t the case. Good for them.

Good for them. But Ohio State has been impressive? For going five sets twice with Maryland? or five sets with Michigan State? or five against Illinois? if anything it should be bumping down Penn State to the OSU tier. The whole Nebraska hasnt been impressive narrative is being pushed by certain posters. Yes, they've struggled at times but they were all of what, 4-5 points going their way from beating Minnesota... which this board has claimed is in this mega tier with Wisconsin.

Good for them. Nebraska didn't go 5 with Maryland twice at home and get outscored by the Terps in one of those matches. (That's the only common match between the two at this point). I think Ohio State deserves all the praise they are getting - they are 9-0 in the B1G with Illinois(x2) and Penn St wins already. But I can still understand the skepticism. They've went 5 in over half of their matches! Hard to argue against a team that keeps winning though. I was thoroughly impressed they turned the PSU match around after getting throttled those first two sets.

Better Nebraska teams have been taken down by worse OSU teams in the past.

I’m not sure that I believe or that I have said personally that I think Minnesota is in the Wisconsin tier. (I may have a while ago after the Purdue series but now I don’t feel that way) also OSU beat a Penn State team who almost beat Minnesota just like how you said Nebraska did. I’m not saying OSU is better I just definitely think they should be in the same tier as of right now. Unless the huskers win today. Also Rylee Rader was injured during the Maryland series and she is one of the best OSU players now that she is getting into form

Ohio state just struggles with consistency in matches but they find a way to pull it out every time
