I swear to God, if MSU uses a 6-2 again next season instead of letting Cullen take the reigns, I will start rooting for U of M. I wonder if Grant’s lack of any playing time this season had to do with this transfer. Did the coaching staff know from the start? Does she have to sit out a year if she goes to U of M if she redshirted her first season at MSU? I think Cullen is going to be very good and will bring better consistency to the Spartan offense. Regarding Grant, it wasn't that long ago when an intraconference transfer was required to sit out a year. But now that the Cliffany Tark Exemption (hat tip: Kingsley) has been established, who knows. The fact that she didn't play in 2019 might help her status. Assuming all of the speculation pans out the big question for me is, can she contribute? If she didn't show enough to crack the MSU lineup in 2019, what can she bring to the Wolverines in 2020?

I saw a picture back when she was playing 16s in club with Hannah and Amber Beals on the stage together receiving some award. Plus, she was recruited by Stanford so that says something.

Still cranking through updates. I was going to write a quick round-up piece on some of the coaching shuffles and transfers that have come down the wire in the past few days, but we're still waiting on an official press release from...well, you know. So, coming soon, I guess.

Coaches! (and other stuff)After all the speculation, waiting, and incorrect predictions by some dork, the two head coaching vacancies in the Big Ten were filled in the span of 24 hours. On January 16th, Rutgers hired Caitlin Schweihofer from Northeastern University, a member of the Colonial Athletic. There is currently some buzzing about potential departures and transfers from this Rutgers squad. It's something to keep an eye on. On January 17th, Ohio State hired Jen Flynn Oldenburg. Jen recently had the opportunity to be an assistant under Jim Stone for Team USA in the U18 World Championships last summer in Egypt, in which USA won their first-ever gold medal in the event. Coach Flynn will be reunited with Emily Londot, an incoming freshman who was a member of that USA team. The other coaching news of note here is that Tyler Hildebrand was named associate head coach at Nebraska. It is the first time somebody has held that title with the Huskers under John Cook. The Other StuffNebraska had a few departures from the program recently, as Anezka Szabo, Chen Abramovich, and Megan Miller entered the portal. Szabo has announced that she will continue her career at Kansas. Nebraska is looking for transfer options at libero/DS. The tea is still hot on that one. Sydney Ferguson has officially transferred to NC State after leaving Penn State early in the offseason. Still hunting for legit confirmation that Hannah Grant has left Michigan State for Michigan. I'm going to end up writing some update pieces in OP as important transfers and other things start to materialize in the offseason. There are still some things that will take place before the season that will likely change my stance on a team in one way or another. More to come.

Praise Punzel! Dennis is out here leaking top secret scheduling information, so I'm going to cover it in case you don't visit the Wisconsin thread (where have you been?). The ACC/B1G Challenge is back in the UW Fieldhouse this year. This also means that Minnesota can look forward to starting the 2020 season in Madison, too. But, regarding Wisconsin, I've compiled the 2019 records and final RPI's for all of their non-conference opponents. Obviously, results never replicate themselves from one year to the next, but it's nice to at least include a baseline for determining SOS and the probability that Wisconsin receives the all-important scheduling bonus in 2020. Whether each of these teams gets better or worse next year is a question that Kingsley will answer through independent research as he pursues a second consecutive * (R)uffda! Award this fall. 19-10 (#37 RPI) 15-13 (#81 RPI) 24-10 (#17 RPI) 11-19 (#181 RPI) 28-6 (#16 RPI) 25-7 (#9 RPI) 20-10 (#135 RPI) 13-17 (#166 RPI)

Has the idea of a season ending tourney gotten any traction? I heard a coach podcast propose moving from a 20 match unbalanced schedule, to an 18 match regular season & 2 match seeded tourney to place 1-4, 5-8, etc. Just Curious?

I feel somewhat inclined to believe that there’s going to be an announcement sometime this offseason about Big Ten scheduling. I think it’s going change. There was a coaches’ conference call last November regarding scheduling. The 18-match conference schedule with some kind of tournament is a very real possibility.

There is no other reasonable response to this poll than Wisconsin. I gave 3 reasons for picking Wisconsin to win the conference last season. Those 3 reasons were Rettke, Rettke, and Rettke. As I posted last season, Rettke has a good supporting cast again this season. Clark will be a big loss, however, Barnes just may be an upgrade at the libero position.

I feel like John Cook has an outsized influence on Big Ten scheduling. He was largely responsible for mostly abandoning the Fri Sat format because it was "too hard."
I hate championships decided on one match. Body of work...
(this includes baseball)

(this includes baseball) When at Wisconsin, Cook also thought to change the BIG10 Fri/Sat play dates to dates that had no routine sports coverage so that volleyball could fill them and get more exposure.
