Preview:
With the graduation of seven seniors, including three starters, the Wolverines will have a very different look in 2020. The team returns much of its offensive arsenal and is adding a major piece at OH2 with superstar freshman recruit Jess Mruzik. Coming off a fantastic AA year, Paige Jones will remain the primary option. Look for returning middles May Pertofsky and Jess Robinson to continue being efficient scorers for Blue, especially when opponents load up on Jones. For as good as Michigan's offense looks to be, defense is where the team needs the most improvement. Back row play and blocking were glaring holes in 2019 and the team must get better in those areas to have success in 2020.
Questions:
- Is Scottee Johnson ready to run a B1G offense? This team has significant firepower and needs a high performance setter to make it all click. Johnson will compete with incoming Juco transfer Jenni Liu and returning sophomore Maddie Dowd for the starting spot.
- How good is Mruzik? She has had an incredible run in 2019 leading her teams to State, National and World Championships and winning MVP awards at every stop. She is graduating early, and we hope to see her in action this spring.
- Can Natalie Smith keep the libero jersey? 2019 was a rough one for her as she tried to replace Jenna Lerg who anchored the back row for four years. Sophomore Amber Beals and incoming recruit Brooke Humphrey will also compete for that spot. The Rosens love their seniors who have dedicated four years to the program and she will be given every opportunity to prove herself, but the leash might be short this season. UPDATE: Natalie Smith no longer listed on the roster.
- Any transfers in the mix? This team is short on smalls and needs better ball control in order to move up in the standings. UPDATE: Welcome Hannah Grant!
