The FIVB announced that professional leagues could start as early as June if they feel they can do it safely. All pro leagues have to be done by the end of April. This obviously doesn't affect China and Japan's leagues as they will be finished by end of January. I guess I am just curious if you think other leagues will wait until October to start or do you expect them to start in July/August which would in fact be very early? I honestly don't think leagues are prepared to begin as early as this summer. This upcoming season won't be a good one as there will be a lot of changes. We can expect pauses and delays as clusters of cases come and go, but I expect them to start around October/November, earliest would be late September.

Serbia's NT will start training next week in Belgrade as restrictions begin to loosen. S: Ognjenovic, Zivkovic, Mirkovic OPP: Boskovic, Bjelica OH: Mihajlovic, Busa, Blagojevic, Milenkovic, Lazovic, Lozo MB: Rasic, Veljkovic, M. Popovic, Aleksic L: Pusic Interesting that their main libero S. Popovic wasn't listed. Probably will take an extended break then join later. I wonder why they are all gathering to train? Isn't the 2020 international season cancelled? Also won't the pro leagues be starting earlier this year? The DR will be opening its training center up soon too, but is working out the protocol now. I would imagine a month, maybe a little less.

I doubt there can be full return to normalcy for any volleyball league until an effective vaccine is found. In the mean time, yes I think NT players need to still train as a group. There is only so much you can do alone under lockdown. Eventually they have to get back together to train, otherwise they are going to lose their skills. That may explain why the NT training is starting up for some teams even without any matches. They have to preserve their skills.

Risa Shinnabe (JPN) announced that she will retire this month. She was one of their key players at last years World Cup especially when Koga couldn't provide any offense. I wonder if Nagaoka will make a return.

Kadochkina and Lazareva in but Russu out? Hmmm... Russu and Kurilo are definitely interesting omissions, seeing as Shcherban, Molova and Malygina havn't made many rosters this quad. Kosheleva struggled with injury this quad but did come back and play in the Grand Champions Cup and probably would have participated in the World Cup had Russia not already attained it's Olympic berth. She basically can return whenever she wants though I think this will be her last hurrah with the NT. Yuri Marichev's big mistake in 2016 was not bringing Startseva. Setters can make, or in the case of Kosianenko (Pankova), break a team. I mean...Russia wasn't even competitive against Serbia in the quarterfinals at Rio. They got blown away. Even though I don't particularly care for Busato after his racist gesture toward the Korean's in the IOQT last year....he has turned this team around. The players all really seem to like him. However credit must be given to Pankov who decided to invest in players like Romanova, Parubets, Voronkova, Lazarenko, Efimova, Galkina and Pilipenko. Russia hasn't looked like much of a threat this quad but I think with the following roster they can compete with just about any team at the OG: S: Startseva, Romanova OH: Kosheleva, Voronkova, Shcherban, Parubets MB: Fetisova, Koroleva, Efimova Opp: Goncharova, Lazareva L: Malova I chose Malova because she was at Rio in 2016. None of the other Libero's this quad have looked that impressive. With Galkina and Pilipenko both on the roster the former was used for serve receive and the latter for defense. That won't suit for the OG. Lazareva at Opp is nice because she spent a bit of time replacing Parubets on the left pin and even had to pass, though not that great, which gives her some versatility value. Who ever is the back-up Opp needs to be efficient since Busato loves to run the double sub. To me Malygina was utterly ineffective during the 2018 World Championships especially when Goncharova was out due to injury halfway through the tournament.

I wonder if Nagaoka will make a return. Whoa...that sucks for Japan. Hopefully Nagaoka will return. I am unsure as to how much of a blow not having an offensive outlet on the right will be for them though. They primarily rely on the left pin for most of their offense. In that game vs. USA during the World Cup, Ishii and Ishikawa played the match of their lives and yet Japan still came up short in the tie breaker.

Her main role is passing as a receiving opposite, but she's also the most well rounded at that position for them. Nagaoka has been out for awhile and even if she does return I don't think she will be a starter.

President of Turkish Volleyball Federation said that they didn't give it a try for Vargas and they won't. Vargas is not an option. My question is: Why? They think Turkey has enough local talent. Natalia Hanikoglu(Russian born, married with Turkish guy) was the key point in 2003 European Championship when Turkish women volleyball was born. But years after investing a lot of money in youth categories, neutralizing someone has zero connection with Turkey is not what they want. Meliha Ismailoglu is Bosnian born, she moved to Turkey when she is 14 and fluent in language. Bosnian and Turkish cultures are smillar, Bosnia was a part of Ottoman Empire for long time...

RUSSIA: I would LOVE to see Kosheleva back as starting OH in the Russian lineup. The Voronkova-Parubets-Goncharova trio simply doesn't have enough firepower to keep up with the top teams. I acknowledge the fact that digging improved with Kosheleva's absence though.
JAPAN: They lost their best non-libero passer. That marks the end of their Olympics dreams, to be honest.

Agree on all of this. To be fair, Japan only had an outside chance of medaling.
