In the 5s game, when UCLA was up 14-11 in the 3rd, UCLA played dink ball twice, hitting out once and getting it blocked the second time. On the third game point, no more dink, blast away for the win. In the 1s game, USC had a little momentum, but the little on that team tried for a dink and didn't clear the net. I'm of the general opinion that in the nervousness of a match point, it is easier to be effective using power than trying to control a touch shot. Sometimes, but I have also seen players blast it out for the match instead of just keeping the ball in play. true, but you don't have to blast it bombs away. It just has to be a full, controlled swing, which, to me, is easier to pull off when you're nervous/adrenaline is flowing than a touch shot.

USC is going to be scary next year when they get their Olympian back. By then the Nourse twins will be an almost unbeatable 2s team. Yes and they'll have some good recruits coming in too. That’s an understatement - Kraft and Maple are a borderline AVP main draw team right now.

I've just seen a lot of players hit it too hard when they have a lot of adrenaline. I guess it goes both ways...maybe also depends on if there is a big blocker at the net?

I've got to think that if you have the 1s and 2s almost certain wins, 3-5 will be able to play freer, which could lead to a lot of lopsided victories. I wonder if the scores would be the same for some of these close matches if all the pairs played at once versus in waves (especially with teams with more seniors vs. freshmen, etc.)? I don't think it really makes a difference. In college tennis all 6 matches are played simultaneously. Still, you have a couple of matches going longer than the others, and everybody gathers around those two courts, putting a lot of additional pressure on the players. Then, it sometimes come down to the last court. And everyone on both teams is crowded around, cheering, shouting, etc. So whether it is 5 matches that start simultaneously, or two matches followed by three matches, you will still have one or two courts with all the attention. In yesterdays SC/UCLA match, it turned out to be court #5 for all the marbles, and May and Muret came though. I think it is a good thing that court #5 wasn't a freshman/sophomore type pairing. May (moreso indoor) and Muret's experience I'm sure prepared them to handle the additional pressure. They both played well in the 2018 NCAA finals victory.

Cal is 9-1. Only loss is first game of season to GCU. I think it is an open question. Cal has played two ranked teams, losing to one and beating the other. We'll have a tie-break match, so to speak, when Cal plays Cal Poly on 3/21. Then they play four ranked teams the weekend of 3/28: -FSU -FAU -FIU -Pepperdine Monday, 3/30, we'll know whether Cal is a contender for an NCAA birth.

wow. USC underperforming, Cal overperforming, or both? Cal vs USC #1 - Mima Mirkovic/Iya Lindahl (CAL) def. Hallgren, Haley/Harward, Hailey (USC) - 21-18, 10-21, 16-14 #2 - Caroline Schafer/Jordan Polo (CAL) def. Doig, Kyla/Slater, Sammy (USC) - 21-18, 21-12 #3 - Nourse, Audrey/Nourse, Nicole (USC) def. Alexia Inman/Madison Dueck (CAL) - 18-21, 21-19, 15-7 #4 - Maddie Micheletti/Ainsley Radell (CAL) def. Dennis, Joy/Hallgren, Harper (USC) - 23-21, 25-23 #5 - Dorn, Cammie/Dreeuws, Paige (USC) def. Chloe Luyties/Jacqueline Ribeiro (CAL) - 21-17, 21-14 Cal has a legit team. Both their #1 and #2 pairs beat USC, and their #3 pairs went to three sets. , #4 pair, was also close. Their #5 pair could possibly be a trouble spot against top teams. Consistency and finishing tough matches have been issues with Cal last season.
