Canada also needs much more than Joseph (even playing very well) to enter the “international volleyball conversation.” Well did they not just qualify for 2021 vnl?? They're really onto something. Could they use more depth, for sure. but I think their leading team isn't too shabby. Not to the levels of USA, China, Italy but its a start. Yes but Canada needs more than for their backup opposite to improve to have more impact. Joseph replacing Van Ryk arguably takes the current best Canadian off the floor; that’s not going to help the team much overall. They need to improve at all other positions first.

Van Ryk played left side in College and sometimes last year with the CNT. She started playing OPP because Abbondanza moved her there because he had Gray and Autumn Bailey at OH. Maglio and Cross are decent middles. The setting, libero, and OPP were the positions that needed most help. Bre King is getting international experience and that will help Her setting (she has only played with CNT one year). If Bailey returns at OH, (which she is still hoping to go somewhere in January), Van Ryk plays OPP. Libero is a bit of a weaker position (Niles played in France). Van Ryk, Maglio and King are only in their second year of pro, so I still expect improvement from them. They definitely don’t have the depth, but they can compete with some of the second tier teams.

Oops...sorry, just realized a post about Joseph playing in Japan went sideways...☺️ Good for her getting on a team there and I hope she has a great year!

Foluke Akinradewo confirmed for Hisamitsu. She still isn’t in Japan though so she will miss at least opening weekend due to quarantine rules.

Not to the levels of USA, China, Italy but its a start. I could see them surpassing the likes of Thailand, South Korea once KYK retires, possibly Belgium maybe even Puerto Rice and Argentina next cycle. They have a good mix of players that has potential with the right coaching hopefully one that sticks around for the long run, we've all seen programs struggle when coaching changes often. I don't consider Belgium, Puerto Rico or Argentina to really be in the "international volleyball conversation." But if that's our standard, then sure.

I think it's pretty clear which teams are the real competition and those that are right under them, but for Canada's standards and for their current level of international volleyball these would be the teams they would need to be able to compete against. If not then their program isn't going anywhere.

Yeah, I was gonna ask, how long is this conversation? I need a sip of water.

The league starts tomorrow and we have no way of knowing if we'll get to watch any of the Americans' matches.

The finals rematch tomorrow of JT vs. Okayama will be the one up in the air.
