idk if this goes on this forum or off the net because this pertains with the athletes and volleytalkers. i follow jenna grey on tiktok, LOVE HER SHE IS SO FUNNY. anyways she made this video talking about how ruthless volleytalk is. vm.tiktok.com/JjEEUEJ/as a community, i feel that we need to realize that athletes are human too and to take their feelings in consideration. it’s really unfortunate that an athlete at that caliber believes that she isn’t good after her freshman year because some randos behind a screen said she wasn’t. try to think about how you would feel if someone said something like that about you before you click the post button.

They work so hard to get where they are. I don’t know how many people could be a college athlete, myself included. It is such a grind. They are trying their hardest, and yes they make mistakes, but so does everyone else.

Been there, done it (multiple sports)!...The abuse can be specific to each sport (and it exists in male sports on steroids). When I made the tennis team, the "banter" was a tad bit different than varsity wrestling/ hoops. In an urban BB league we had racial antipathy thrown in, to boot! As far as VT-snakes, "these people be crazy".

I certainly am a vocal person on this forum and many think my comments can at times be unnecessarily harsh and negative, and sometimes they are, but it's almost always about a persons play, not who that person is. I rarely see people post hateful things about players. Even among the most vocal posters, this forum is incredibly tame regarding what is perceived to be criticism. She choose to accept a scholarship to play volleyball for one of the most visible programs in the country. I'm not sure what comments she was referring to when she was a freshmen, but anyone in the public eye should expect to be both praised and criticized. People have opinions. If people thought she wasn't a good setter her freshmen year and voiced that here, I see nothing wrong with that. This is a forum, not cheerleading practice. If players and coaches and whomever else we talk about just want to get their egos boosted and don't want to read opinions they don't agree with because it makes them feel bad, they should just NOT come to this site. The criticisms are almost always about a persons play on the court, this is volleyball after all. It's rare you see people actually degrading players looks or attitude or emotional state, or intelligence, or pretty much anything NOT having to do with volleyball.

I mean, say it's game day and posters are commenting on the match they are watching. Player 1 is getting a ton of kills and making great plays while player 2 is making tons of errors and getting aced. Are we supposed to just only talk about player 1? What criticism is "too harsh" for player 2? If I had a dollar for every time some iteration of (insert player) is "stinking up the court", "sub her out", "playing horrible", "why is she still on the floor" etc. etc., was said on this board by pretty much every poster, I'd be a millionaire.

I’m willing to bet $$$ that the really hateful comments against certain players are posted by parents of a teammate of that player.

I do agree that there are many college sports boards that are MUCH worse than this one. This board is very unique. Like, I post a thread about Towson cancelling a match against Coppin State, and posing the hypothetical question if that was done for RPI reasons/giving them a better chance at an at-large. Then, literally the same day, the actual head coach for Towson comes on to VolleyTalk and post/state his case and give reasoning for the cancellation, and told me I need to put on my big boy pants and call him I think this board can be overly sensitive sometime, but that’s a side effect to the fact that prominent people in the volleyball world post here and make it one of the best sports forums.

I see the argument of some might be a little sensitive, but I’ve seen people say things like “(player) is terrible,” and that’s a bit over the top. A bad game or a stretch of bad games doesn’t make you a bad player. It happens.

I've actually had a theory for a while that one of the hurdles to having volleyball grow as a sport is that we need to embrace negative commentary. I'm grateful for the job that Lee Feinswog does at VolleyballMag, but you know who draws viewers? Stephen A. Smith and Colin Cowherd. Real debates over who should be starting, who choked, or what coaches should get fired is how popular sports work (at least in the US and Europe). We seem to be in this weird spot where we want the sport to grow without being ok with those debates.

I agree that personal attacks on players are extremely rare on here; I don't read every single post on every thread, but nevertheless. I also agree that the sensitivity on here is way too high.

Too full of himself these days? YA: he's funny, tho'! Phony debates aren't what VB needs for its future! Btw: there are better boards, also.

When did Towson hire this coach?
