I’m assuming it’s Saige as we don’t really need another setter!! To be honest, using that logic, Texas doesn't really need another setter too lol. It might be the weakest position on their team, but they'll still have Gabriel and Cabello. I don't know if the initial comment was gearing more towards the idea that if we were to land Ka'aha'aina-Torres, then we would only have one available scholarship for Matias if Byrd departs from the team after this coming Fall season. If we didn't land Ka'aha'aina-Torres, then we would still have two open scholarships for Matias and Kahahawai. Kahahawai has many offers though, so I'm guessing that the poster was probably talking about Kahahawai. Also following that logic, I wonder if Hawaii would need another opposite next year since they are bringing in two (including a lefty) this year. But I guess Ka’aha’aina is too good to pass up if she’s interested, especially as a local product.

True, Robyn is bringing in two Opposites this coming season, but they are both untested at the D1 level. She also has a whole lot of Outside Hitters, but except for one at the moment, has any D1 level experience. The only Outside Hitter with experience is BVS, if Jolie does not decide to play. So Robyn will be going into the coming season with very inexperienced pin hitters. Hopefully, a couple of these young players prove they can play at the D1 level. It will be a very big plus if Jolie decides to play this coming season. This will give the other young players a chance to get use to D1 Level play, not be force fed into it.

Yea, bringing in 2 opposites for next year is a very interesting recruiting move. I can see Ilayda playing OH at some point, but the UH release predicted she would be at OPP. De Goede is not used to OH.

I really like the size of the freshmen class: 6’3” De Goede, 6’3” Leoniak, 6’5” Demirtas.

2021 CURRENT ROSTER FRESHMAN: SIGNED POSITION
Lang: Setter Ikenaga: Libero/DS Springborn: MB/OPP Kiraly: MB Glagau: OH Johnson: OH, 6 rotation De Goede: OPP (lefty), 6 rotation Leoniak: OH, 6 rotation Demirtas: OPP, 6 rotation
2021 freshman depth chart (assuming Rasmussen plays, and no transfers): Lang: competes with Byrd to start in a 5-1; starts with Byrd in a 6-2. Ikenaga: walk-on, competes to start at the open libero position with Hanawahine, and possibly with Van Sickle who is listed as OH/Libero. Springborn: walk-on, not projected to start. Wildcard. Kiraly: assuming Igiede and Williams begin as MB1&2, Kiraly competes with Westerberg and Akana for MB3. Glagau: likely back to beach and no longer on indoor scholarship. Johnson: assuming Rasmussen and Van Sickle begin as OH1&2, Johnson competes with Wagoner, Leoniak, Westerberg, and Akana for OH3. Van Sickle is listed as OH/Libero and could transition to libero. Rasmussen injury hx suggests she gets rested often. OH3 sees the court early and often. De Goede: the OPP position is open. De Goede competes with Demirtas, Westerberg, and Akana for OPP1. Leoniak: competes with Johnson, Wagoner, Westerberg, and Akana for OH3. Demirtas: competes with De Goede, Westerberg, and Akana for OPP1.
The freshman OPPs and MBs will likely be looked at for their potential to play other positions.

The way Ah Mow recruits for her preferred system, the distinction between OH and OPP gets a bit blurred. Ideally she wants all her pins able to pass and be 6 rotation. She wants them all comfortable hitting from left or right or out of the back row. She wants them comfortable blocking on the left or right, and to flex within a set to match ups. To the extent that they can't, they limit themselves and how Ah Mow can use them. We've seen Van Sickle and Rasmussen play all-around, hit from everywhere, block on either side, and be successful at it. They'll set the benchmark for the other pin hitters to meet or exceed on day one. All the hitters will have their work cut out for them to get on the court and stay there. If they limit themselves to left or right pin, they'll need to be exceptional at it.

Her passing is valuable and she can hit from anywhere

This is going to be on of the deepest Wahine Teams that I can think of, in a long time. If any of the Starters fails to perform, there will be someone right behind them who would be willing and capable of replacing them in the Starting lineup. The Wahine are at least two deep in every position, if not three deep.

Before the Wahine use to field a team with 4, 5, or 6 DS's. What Robyn has done is replace some of these DS players with Pin Hitters, or Middles, who can play all 6 rotations, or play multiple positions. Giving the Wahine and Coaching Staff more attackers to fall back on, or for them to use.
