No one is being denied anything. No one is preventing any resident of DC from moving the mile or two (or whatever) to Maryland or Virginia. Where has Maryland said it does not want its former land back? Seems silly and hard to believe that they don't want more taxpayers, many of which are wealthy and have expensive homes in a high cost-of-living area and so would contribute a significant amount of income taxes to the state. Regardless, that's likely the only way that current DC residents will gain representation, if Maryland agrees to take them in. They aren't going to make a special little one-off city-state. PR actually has a much better case. Granted, personally, I think we should add PR for 51 states and then balanced by 51 city-states. That would actually take a step in addressing the true divide in this country between urban and non-urban.
But they certainly aren't going to do it as a one-off.

I truly don't understand why posters like you take such strong stances on issues they've clearly never researched.

"You want democracy? Just move! That's America, folks!"
How ignorant.

Anyone sick of these fake moral high ground claims? I know I am. Watch how easily they crumble:
given the hypothetical choice between granting DC voters representation in 2022, via a vote in DC and Maryland to take DC lands back in the state, or granting DC voters representation in 2032, via having enough majority in congress to grant DC statehood, which would you choose?
Boom. Roasted.
You don't give a rat's turd about DC residents representation. You only care about the two senators, and I just proved it.
Would I personally vote for DC statehood, today? Sure, I have no problem with it. But a lot of people would vote against it, and it's very easy to see why: there is no actual compelling argument for it.

lmao
You haven't proven anything. The compelling argument for giving DC statehood is 1) DC residents want it and 2) it ensures federal representation for 700,000 people. And no, I don't care about the Senators -- hell, let's abolish the Senate (and the electoral college) and then maybe people like you won't be against providing American citizens a democratic voice!
God, you're bad at this.

DC having two D senators wouldn't change any majorities in recent history IIRC.
It's all about representation. PR has a republican nonvoting delegate in the house and split "shadow senator" delegation. They should still get statehood. So should (probably combined into some sort of pacific state) Guam, American Samoa, N Mariana Islands. And usvi in some other capacity as well.

Really the best answer is, like was mentioned before, just getting rid of the Senate.

^^^ you heard it here folks.
DC would be good to go if Eleanor Holmes Norton simply had the power to vote. Done. That's it. Don't need two senators.
OK, that might actually have a chance at passing. Far more than the 0% chance of DC statehood passing.

Meanwhile, as has always been correct: if DC residents want representation in the Senate, then the actual, more than zero chance of that happening would be for DC and Maryland residents to get to vote if DC lands should be given back to Maryland. The people who actually live there should be the ones who get to decide, not internet activists.

DC residents have already voted for statehood. Overwhelmingly.

DC residents have already voted for statehood. Overwhelmingly. As meaningful as if they overwhelmingly voted for the fire department to be replaced by a troupe of flying unicorns carrying buckets of water.
If they want an actual, meaningful vote, then one like I suggested would be one such way.

You are the only person who wants retrocession. Maryland doesn't want it and DC citizens don't want it. It's a separate place with a distinct culture and history.
