It was stated in the Minneapolis newspaper today that our AD said 'no' to extending scholarships for athletes, except for a few scholarships in football. So, Samedy and Pittman will have to transfer somewhere else to continue to play beyond this spring. Teams that welcome their seniors back will have a decided advantage over teams that don't.

I saw a 60 Minutes piece that featured the elimination of men’s gymnastics (which didn’t seem to be a big expense by BIG standards). Funding 2-3 volleyball seniors for a semester shouldn’t break the bank? Or is it that Minnesota is a "football" school and the B1G is a "football" conference, and neither really give much of a damn about volleyball? Nebraska does, but who else does, really? I'm not buying that they can't afford it.

This thread is horrible. Sorry I came to see something about returning seniors and have to wade through all this crap. Yep. Needs to be unpinned.

Yeah, pay to play this spring and next fall at Minnesota, or transfer somewhere else that will let them play for free.

So they aren’t paying for this spring.

So they aren’t paying for this spring. Yeah, you're right. So, they have to transfer if they want to take advantage of their extended eligibility for Fall 2021. Will underclassmen at Minnesota also be denied the extra year?

So, they have to transfer if they want to take advantage of their extended eligibility for Fall 2021. Will underclassmen at Minnesota also be denied the extra year? Only the 2020 seniors get the waiver to allow their school to exceed the 12 scholarships (and only if they don't transfer). Underclassmen will count against scholarship limits. So it won't cost the school more to give younger student athletes the extra year but they will need a scholarship available. That impacts recruiting. At schools like Minnesota the 2022 class is mostly complete, so 2020 juniors may be out of luck. With 2023 recruiting underway, schools will need to start deciding if they want to bring back athletes that are currently sophomores. There is time to evaluate the freshman before making any decisions on those scholarships. There are other considerations, such as total roster size, but the simple answer is decisions will be made on a case by case basis.

I highly doubt Pittman is planning on being a sixth year senior. I also doubt Samedy would plan to stay for fall 2021,especially if MN ends up playing the full spring schedule they currently have planned and get deep into the tournament.

I agree...but more importantly your screen name has to be a top 3!

I agree...but more importantly your screen name has to be a top 3! Isn’t Pittman in Grad School already? Don't know. Is it correct that spring season doesn't count against eligibility? If that's the case, and she is in grad school...maybe she would stay. I still think it's unlikely.

Sorry, just sorta jumping in here without reading the whole thread. So... what's the deal with Minnesota? Do the seniors have any recourse?

Sorry, just sorta jumping in here without reading the whole thread. So... what's the deal with Minnesota? Do the seniors have any recourse? Transfer to anywhere that has scholarship money available. The NCAA is allowing institutions to allocate more money to scholarships for all sports for next season, but there is no way to tell any school that they have to do that.

Atherton can transfer again after the season and still have a year, but can't play another year for the Gophers due to their own internal rules?
