I'd like to see AU and the Puerto Rican league partner or adjust their schedules in a way where a player could potentially do both.
Previous scheduling would have the PR league would overlap with AU, eliminating players like Cruz, Rosado, and Velez... I think the leagues potentially working together on a schedule (so they don't overlap) would be in good interest to USAV, PRV, and NORCECA.

Some statistical perspectives on draft order, colors, etc.
Total Win Points by Color 1540: Orange 1340: Purple 1320: Blue 1200: Gold
So for this season, at least, there was a clear penalty to drafting in Gold. For example, Larson averaged 356 win points per week, but only 286 when she was Gold captain but scored a near-perfect 500 win points (3-0 in matches, 8-1 in sets) as the Orange captain and then 420 points in week 1, when she was not the Purple captain but was the #1 overall pick.
The value of Orange was heavily influenced by weeks 3 and 4. In week 3 Betty was the Orange captain and got Karsta (Ebony was a captain and wasn't going to pick Karsta and Leah went with Aury as her first pick) and went 3-0 in matches and 8-1 in sets, which moved her up to #1. So week 4, Jordan was the Orange captain and the draft was very similar, with Ebony falling to her (Kelly Hunter as the Purple captain picked Leah and then Karsta wasn't going to take an opposite first pick) and Jordan went 3-0 and 8-1 as well.
Positions as Captains Outsides: 11 captainships, 302 point average Opposites: 4 captainships, 165 point average Setters: 2 captainships, 230 point average Middles: 2 captainships, 350 point average (both were week 1, and Bastianelli wasn't actually able to play after drafting the team, so it turned into Team King) Liberos: 1 captainship, 260 points
Not a ton of insight here as the captains were overwhelmingly outsides. The first two opposites captainships (Karsta week 2, Ebony week 3) were disastrous, combing to go 3-15 in sets and 0-6 in matches, but then Karsta's week 4 and week 5 teams did better: 3-3 in matches and 9-9 in sets.
Setters were totally divergent: 0-3/0-9 for Hunter in Week 4 and 3-0/7-2 for King in Week 5.
Interesting that Week 5 was the only split week from a match perspective. In every other week, one team went 3-0, one team went 2-1, one team went 1-2, and one team went 0-3. Week 2 was a bit of a different week as well, with Blue going 1-2, but with a 6-3 set record, so they actually earned more win points than Gold, who went 2-1, but with a 4-5 set record. I was the Blue coach this week, and this was the week that we were up 24-15 in set one and Jordan went on a 7-point service run. We won 25-22, but ended up losing that match by one point.
If we had stopped that run at just 5 points to make it 25-20, that's an additional 40 points for Brie King, which would have put her 2nd in the league over De La Cruz. And that's one of the coolest things to me about this league, every point really did matter!

Can’t remember where I saw it now, but someone applied the AU scoring system to one of the top European leagues. It’s definitely biased toward opposites and outsides, for better or worse. Im pretty sure that was Trinsey (may be wrong). They did it with the VNL too. I think it's always going to be that way... at least with outsides... since they can do every skill. Im sure we'll see some adjustments for season 2 Found it. Mark Lebedew applied it to the men's PlusLiga. But what's cool is that he provides an app where you can tweak the point values and see the results (someone could upload the AU data). marklebedew.com/2021/03/09/who-won-plusliga/marklebedew.com/2021/03/10/who-won-plusliga-the-final-answer/apps.untan.gl/auvolley/

Sheilla's recent interview with Globoesporte. She talks about her decision to join AU, her experience playing here, and her outlook for Tokyo. linkWhen she first arrived in Texas and had to quarantine her immediate thought was, "My God, what am I doing here?" She thought about leaving, but decided to stay and said she has no regrets. "It was a really cool experience, I really liked it. It was very crazy at first, but I really liked the system, how it is done. It's all new." Her plans on the Olympics before the pandemic and now moving forward: "It was not an easy decision to make mainly because of the Olympics, because I knew it would be a very short period. When I decided to return, in 2019, I focused on the Olympics. They were my priority. I really put that as a very focus. Then the pandemic came, plans changed. Did I discard the Olympics? No, I didn't. But I did not put it as the main focus. If the preparation I have done is not enough, it is not something that will eat at me, it will not kill me. I am very calm with this decision." "I arrived here very late, in the cold week, without training. So, I'm certainly not in my best shape, so much so that I hurt my calf in the first week. I think, yes, that Brazil has a chance to fight for a medal. So, I just want to go if I know I have a chance to be there to contribute on the court, not just outside. Outside I know I can contribute. I know that mentally I can help the selection a lot. I think that in maturity, I am far above the majority. Nor is it finding me, or anything, you can ask anyone who's going to say that. But if I don't know that I can help technically, physically, I don't want to go. And I know that Ze roberto would think like me." "People may think: Wow, but it's the Olympics, aren't you going to do anything to go? It's not that I'm not going to do anything to go. The Olympics are fantastic, so much so that I decided to play again. When I came to 2019 tring to go to the Olympics in 2020, training and traying to go, I had plans for my family to go, watch, understand? There were a thousand things that today are not going to happen anymore." Her thoughts about the drafting process: "It's super fun and I like to try to understand the mind of whoever is choosing, because who is doing that, at that moment. And many times people make mistakes (laughs)." Why she wants volleyball to grow in USA: "Although I am not one of the organizers, I also want to grow the league. It is a country that we know that likes sports, that values spiorts, that invests in sports. So, if you can make volleyball as big as, in a word, not as big as basketball and football, but if it's half of what they are, it's already great. But it is difficult to speak (if it will continue). Because here are two months, right? If I play in Brazil, for example, I would not be able to play here. The only place I could play to play here is China, which ends in January. I could come here soon after, as Jordan did. But, going to China, for sure, me, mother, with two girls is not my will now. So, that would have to be it, not playing again all year to come here." "I came here with the goal of making this league perpetuate and grow. If we managed to do that, it will be good. Very good for Americans and very good for the whole world. Because it's more of a place to play. And it is a beautiful market."

It would be fun if they took the league on a barnstorming tour next year. Maybe four to six different cities. I was part of today's Zoom meeting with the AU commissioner. I asked him this exact question. I asked if his plan was for the league to "play in Lincoln, then Chicago the next weekend, then Seattle, then Provo, etc. Or if his vision is to keep the league in one location for the entirely of the season?" He answered that his plan as of right now is one location. I like the traveling from week to week idea. I imagine they'd sell many more tickets, get more press coverage, and gain more fans if they visited four or five cities where volleyball is popular, especially if they were cities where some of the top AU players played collegiately. But I'm also able to see that logistically, one location makes more sense and would be much easier for the players. Ultimately, this is a league for the players. They want the players to enjoy the experience. Hard to argue with that.

I'm also curious if there are any plans to extend the length of the season, or whether they think five weeks (annually?) is the sweet spot in terms of maximizing interest, TV contracts, etc.

I'm curious how their TV ratings numbers were... I didnt find any info on any of the ratings sites.
Im not a fan of it being on CBSSN tbh. FS2 was fine (FS1 is better) but with basketball, there's a lot of overlap

They went above and beyond their contractual duties when it came to total broadcast time given to the league. Great news overall for the future of the league.

Would you say that the league exceeded expectations in every way? I'm asking everyone not just you but would welcome your opinion.

I like that the league did well, but I still can't stand the format... I love the team aspect and the standouts on those teams that shine, not purely player based... But hey, if this grows the sport... cant complain

I think it’s interesting to talk about team allegiance versus player allegiance in a fan base. Obviously, since these teams aren’t regionally based, I think it’s going to be much harder for fans following the league to be invested. Following favorite players, on the other hand, might be a better way to draw people in. Still, it’s not my favorite format because I think the point system and everything makes it difficult for noncasual fans who maybe aren’t super into volleyball to follow along. Quite a conundrum.
Kind of an essay but these are my thoughts.

If there will be more players interested to play in the next season, I think these will work:
1. The first picks each draft will be a permanent player of the team. That way there is a sense of direction ans progression as each team is slowly built while respecting the player's freedom to choose.
2. They have a very good set of coaches, and I think they should be drafted as well. Draft the coaches in the first week, then draft the players the following weeks. That gives the players two full weeks to settle down.
3. Five sets instead of three. Starting lineup A for sets 1/3/5 and starting lineup B for sets 2/4. Bench players should be empowered too.
