I hear all of you saying that she has played against high level teams but most of the clips that I've seen online is her high attack point/technique. I hope this is not based upon this. Attacking against high level teams does not translate great defense backrow or passing. I've tried watching games that shows her great defense and passing. She's a great player don't get me wrong. However, we can't say that she'll be an Amy Neal right away. Why are so hung up on debating this? It's just typical fan enthusiasm about incoming recruits. We should find out soon just how good she is. I'm excited as well but I've been there before where we overhype and come up short. It's like we set up our own mental breakdown. "like how come this player is so bad, she/they were recruited so well" or "looked so well" I'm excited but I think we have to be careful in how we judge them later on when they actually get on and play.

And, more recruits/players who meet or exceed the fan expectations. Nobody bats 1.000. Just take it all in stride, and let the chips fall where they may.

At the risk of getting myself and others too excited as I could be reading things completely wrong, I noticed on Melanie's Instagram today that she (recently?) started following Adhuoljok Malual. I had visited Melanie's IG page a few days ago, and I don't recall her following Malual. Of course, I could have missed it and this is a much older follow. First time I'd ever stumbled on Malual's IG page based on Melanie following her. Malual is also (somewhat recently?) following Melanie, Molly, and Asjia, and vice verse. Molly following Malual seems like Molly's most recent follow, but basing that just on it being listed on top of list. For Asjia, doesn't seem all that recent. We'll know soon if Malual will be enrolled for the Spring. Melanie indicates that she'd be in Monterrey, MX today, and then at Texas on Sunday. Safe travels to her.

Well you definitely just got me excited!!! I do find it interesting that she is not being followed or following any coaches

Now that we know Melanie has arrived safely in Austin, how do we think she will be best utilized this Spring? Assuming everyone from the Fall 2020 starting lineup is healthy, I don't believe Melanie will be a starter at OH. But, I think the coaching staff will want to utilize her jump serve, as long as she shows consistency with it in practice. So, who does she replace at the service line? We saw DS Reilly Heinrich sub in for Eggleston at the service line when Logan was struggling, but I believe that was only late in a set when we still had some substitutions available; can't do that the entire set. So, it's possible Melanie could fill that role; but, that only allows her to serve 1-2 rotations per set at most, I believe. As for the current back row players, their service aces in the Fall were very close (O'Brien: 13; Iosia: 12; Petersen: 11); service errors were a different story (Iosia: 32; Petersen: 11; O'Brien: 10). I'm sure that doesn't tell the whole story, as there are probably stats as to how many times serves didn't result in aces, but did take the opponent out of system. With Iosia also being the secondary setter on the court, I don't see her losing her starting spot. O'Brien is hands down the best backrow player, so her spot is secure as the Libero. That leaves Sydney Petersen; I have to believe it comes down to Parra's ball control versus Petersen's. Too bad Melanie can't sub in to serve for Jhenna Gabriel (5 aces to 19 service errors). texassports.com/sports/womens-volleyball/stats/2020#individual

Assuming everyone from the Fall 2020 starting lineup is healthy, I don't believe Melanie will be a starter at OH. No chance of Fields going back to opp? I suppose anything is possible; but, that puts Molly Phillips on the bench, and she did quite well at Opposite this Fall (out of necessity).
If Madison Williams is fully healthy and lights it up, I suppose she could also be a candidate to start at OH, and then that would result in Skylar moving to Opposite, and Molly to the bench; but, I don't see that as very likely at all.

I think fields is a better oppo than outside. Though she is pretty good on either side

I don't expect any significant lineup changes unless driven by injury or COVID. My understanding is that Texas cannot resume 20 hour practice weeks immediately and will likely play only a few matches in the spring prior to the tournament. I think it would be dicey to make a significant lineup change and try to gel with the new lineup with limited practice and games prior to the tournament. I think we may see some experimenting with lineups just to get some playing time for the freshmen, but the concentration will be on tournament prep. Something like Fields going back to opposite is probably a subject that should be delayed to discussion of the Fall 21 season.
